William Byron Anticipates Tough Competition in Quest for Daytona 500 Three-Peat

William Byron doesn't expect to have many friends as he chases Daytona 500 history

Since the inaugural race in 1959, only 13 drivers have clinched multiple victories at the Daytona 500, with a mere five achieving this feat consecutively. This elite group includes legendary names such as Petty, Yarborough, Hamlin, and Marlin; however, none have ever triumphed in NASCAR’s premier event for three consecutive years.

William Byron is set to challenge this historical barrier, seeking to make history himself after successfully navigating wrecks to secure wins in both 2024 and 2025.

When asked if he has allowed himself to envision a possible three-peat, Byron’s response was succinct: “Not much.” This doesn’t detract from the significance of the goal for the driver of the No. 24 Chevrolet.

“Clearly, that’s the objective. I think about the past races often, whether through videos or memories that pop up,” Byron reflected. “These moments define my career. They’re fantastic and special. However, I try not to project too far into the future. My focus is on what needs to happen in the days leading up to the race.”

After enjoying a productive off-season, Byron expressed his eagerness to return to racing for the 2026 NASCAR Cup season. He admitted being surprised that no driver has yet secured three consecutive Daytona 500 victories.

“It’s surprising to me because I feel like there have been drafting packages that might have made it easier to win three in a row than the current one,” Byron said. “I’m a bit taken aback that someone like Dale Jr. didn’t achieve it; his team had a strong grasp on what it took to stay competitive, and he consistently made wise decisions. This highlights just how challenging this race is and the immense pressure involved.”

Byron elaborated on the contrast between winning at Daytona and other tracks. “It’s not akin to Martinsville, where you can establish a rhythm, lead laps, and secure a win. This race is highly situational; it demands split-second decision-making, which likely contributes to its entertainment value,” he noted.

In the 2024 race, Byron found himself at the front when the caution flag was waved, but his latest victory was nothing short of extraordinary. He was several rows behind at the last lap yet narrowly avoided a significant crash that ensnared all top five contenders.

“It was incredibly unpredictable,” Byron recounted, reflecting on his second triumph at the 500. “I didn’t feel I had a chance to win until we crossed the white flag. Coming off turn two, I sensed an opportunity to help Cole [Custer] win, and perhaps gain a run at the finish line. I knew we were in the preferred lane on the backstretch.”

As a two-time reigning champion, one might expect Byron to have many allies in the drafting process this weekend. However, he anticipates the opposite, believing that his competitors will be eager to push the No. 24 out of contention.

“I think it will be the opposite, for sure. I won’t have many friends,” Byron commented. “It really depends on drafting strategies. If you’re skilled and make astute decisions, drivers typically collaborate with you. However, as the race progresses, it might be challenging to find those allies to assist in making a move. I’ll need to stay sharp and avoid overthinking, simply reacting to the situation as it unfolds.”
