Tuchel Stands Firm Amid Criticism Following England’s World Cup Exit

Tuchel defiant in face of criticism over decisions in England exit: ‘I have no regrets’

Thomas Tuchel has made it clear that he is not inclined to participate in the “the match no one wants to play in” regarding England’s exit from the World Cup. He remains determined to bridge the gap with the top nations in football.

Even former President Donald Trump has weighed in on Tuchel’s strategic choices during the semi-final loss to Argentina, questioning why he opted to position Harry Kane as a defender while England was trying to maintain a 1-0 lead. Ahead of Saturday night’s third-place playoff against France, which Tuchel labeled as “I believe that three other nations [in the semi-finals] have almost expectations to win the title. This is not us,” the England head coach stood resolute in his choices, emphasizing the importance of learning from this experience.

“France, Spain, Argentina expect almost they’re on that level that they expect to win. We are not there yet. There is still a gap to close. This is what we will do from tomorrow. We will not stop. We will not stop hunting. We will not stop challenging. We have things to improve in a football matter. And this is the context. So there is not a lot of room for drama. If drama is needed, if the blame game needs to be played, OK, we can do that. But I have the right to not engage.” Tuchel stated. “I felt that we had to do something different for the team, and I took a decision, trusting my instinct, my intuition, my experience, trusting my competitiveness, and I took the decision in order to help the team and get the result. But the decisions are made under stress. The decisions are made in game. I would regret it if we didn’t react. But I have no regrets over the decision itself.”

When asked if he had any regrets about his decisions after reflecting for 48 hours, Tuchel replied.

“They took the lead, and they took their best player and put him on defence,”

Tuchel also rejected Trump’s earlier comments made during a press conference with Fifa President Gianni Infantino. Trump remarked, “We have got to be a little offensive, right? But no I’m not going to call it. What do I know about coaching? It was unusual.”

On Friday, England had their final training session at their Kansas City base before heading to Miami for the playoff – a delay occurred due to thunderstorms in the area. Players such as Jude Bellingham and Jordan Henderson were seen enjoying a barbecue on Thursday night. John Stones shared that processing the defeat has been challenging.

“you use Donald Trump as your witness?” he said. “We defended in a deep block. That’s what you do if you defend in a block. You defend in a block,”
