Katie Boulter Achieves Stunning Victory Over Rybakina at Queen’s Club

Katie Boulter stuns Rybakina for biggest win after Raducanu starts Queen’s party

Katie Boulter triumphed over Elena Rybakina in a hard-fought match, marking the most significant win of her career. The British No. 3 secured a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 victory against the world No. 2 and Australian Open champion, capping off a long day on the court.

Emma Raducanu also advanced on Friday, defeating Sorana Cirstea, the seventh seed and one of the season’s standout players, with a score of 6-4, 6-2, to reach the quarter-finals at the Queen’s Club. However, the winner of Raducanu’s upcoming match against Uzbekistan’s Kamilla Rakhimova will face a grueling schedule, as both players are set to compete twice on Saturday due to delays caused by rain on Friday.

Boulter has previously celebrated notable victories, including defeating WTA No. 5 Jessica Pegula, but this match stands as the pinnacle of her achievements. It is also noteworthy that this victory marks the highest-ranked opponent any British player has defeated since Johanna Konta’s upset of Simona Halep in 2017. Earlier in the day, Boulter had already notched a win against Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian, triumphing 6-1, 6-3.

“Honestly, I’m not really sure what to say, but I really feel like this win definitely goes towards the crowd that got me through it tonight and stayed out here,” Boulter shared. “The atmosphere was absolutely incredible. I just tried to tell myself to keep backing myself and go for it. If you don’t go for it, then you’re going to regret the things that you’ve worked so hard for.

“The atmosphere was absolutely incredible. I just tried to tell myself to keep backing myself and go for it. If you don’t go for it, then you’re going to regret the things that you’ve worked so hard for. “I’m standing here a winner, and it’s because I trusted my game, I trusted my coaching team, who were always with me and pushing me. So yeah, I’m so proud of today.”

Initially, Rybakina was dominant, conceding only four points on her serve in the first ten games and facing no break points. In contrast, Boulter faced significant challenges with her service games, with Rybakina unable to capitalize on nine break points during the match.

The match shifted dramatically at 5-5, when Rybakina faltered, making a series of unforced errors, including a double fault that allowed Boulter to break her serve. After securing the break, Boulter maintained her composure and delivered just enough strong serves to finish the set. Despite losing momentum in the second set, Boulter rebounded strongly at the start of the third set, finding her rhythm with improved serving.

In a contest characterized by powerful serves and aggressive play, Boulter displayed greater boldness and precision in the final moments. She sealed her landmark victory by serving out the final game with confidence.

Earlier in the day, Raducanu showcased her best form of the season against Cirstea, while Rakhimova edged out Britain’s Harriet Dart with a score of 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 to reach the quarter-finals. The winner of the match on Saturday will face 18-year-old sixth seed Iva Jovic, who secured her first top-five victory over Amanda Anisimova, the second seed and world No. 5.

The day was chaotic, as rain on Thursday had postponed all matches, leading to a packed Friday schedule with many players competing twice. By the time Boulter and Rybakina stepped onto the court at precisely 5:41 PM, the hope of completing all matches had significantly diminished.

Raducanu was originally slated to play on Court 1, the secondary court, but broadcast limitations meant that this court could not be shown live, leading tournament organizers to hope for timely arrivals on court.

Regardless of the challenges ahead, the upcoming Saturday poses a tough test for either winner against Jovic, who is emerging as a bright talent in the sport. Nevertheless, Raducanu remained relaxed and optimistic as she observed Boulter’s match concluding. This victory against Cirstea, ranked No. 18 in the world, marks Raducanu’s first win over a top-20 opponent in over a year.
