Joe Gibbs’ Unwavering Support for the Hamlins Over the Past Year

How Joe Gibbs supported the Hamlins over the past year

Denny Hamlin has expressed profound gratitude for the immense support provided by Joe Gibbs to his family throughout the past year, particularly in the wake of a devastating house fire that tragically resulted in the death of his father, Dennis, and left his mother, Mary Lou, briefly hospitalized.

During an interview on Daytona 500 Media Day, Hamlin reflected on the outreach from his business partner, Michael Jordan, who also experienced the loss of his father to a violent crime in 1993. While acknowledging Jordan’s multiple offers of assistance, Hamlin emphasized that it was Gibbs who truly stepped up during this challenging time.

“Michael reached out several times and offered help, especially since we were at Atrium Health Wake Forest Burn Center in Winston-Salem, where he knows many people,” Hamlin shared. “But honestly, we didn’t delve into that because of the support I received from Joe.”

Gibbs, who has endured his own share of heartache after losing both sons over the last decade, understands grief intimately. Hamlin has spent his entire 22-year racing career under Gibbs’ mentorship, viewing him as a father figure.

“Joe is extraordinarily important to me,” Hamlin stated. “He arrived at the hospital the night of the incident. His leadership is remarkable, especially considering his experiences.”

In his father’s final year battling a terminal illness, Gibbs made it a priority to spend quality time with him. Faith plays a significant role in Gibbs’ life, impacting their relationship.

“Joe made it a point to visit my dad nearly every week, sharing stories and praying together,” Hamlin noted. “My father was focused on reconciling his faith in his final year, and Joe was a vital part of that journey.”

Hamlin acknowledged the effort Gibbs put forth, noting that his parents did not live nearby. “Joe went out of his way to share those moments with my dad, and for that, we are profoundly grateful,” he added.

As Hamlin reflects on his current state following the recent race, he admits the journey toward normalcy is gradual. “I feel like we’re starting to find our rhythm again,” he remarked. “It would be untrue to say I’m as driven as I have been in previous years, but I understand it will take time.”

Despite the emotional toll, Hamlin remains competitive. “Each day at the racetrack brings me closer to my former self. I am too competitive to merely go through the motions. As we engage in practice and qualifying, I feel myself improving.”

Hamlin reminisced about the pride he felt knowing his father witnessed his peak performance last year, especially when he nearly clinched the championship title.
