Bubba Wallace Optimistic About His Chances in the Daytona 500

Bubba Wallace sees 'good signs,' confident in Daytona 500 win shot

In the world of NASCAR, four premier events stand out, and Bubba Wallace has already claimed victory in one, triumphing over Kyle Larson at the 2025 Brickyard 400. Yet, the Daytona 500 remains a coveted prize for him.

Wallace, driving for 23XI Racing, has consistently been a formidable contender at superspeedways. He secured his first Cup Series win at Talladega Superspeedway back in 2021, showcasing his skills on these high-speed tracks.

When it comes to the Daytona 500, Wallace’s history is notable. He has come agonizingly close to winning the prestigious race on two occasions. In 2018, he finished as the runner-up in his inaugural Daytona 500, and just a few years later, he again placed second in 2022.

That 2022 race saw him narrowly miss out on victory, as he brushed against the left-rear fender of eventual winner Austin Cindric, finishing just 0.036 seconds behind. Could this be a sign that fortune is turning in his favor?

This Sunday marks Wallace’s ninth attempt at the Daytona 500, and he exudes confidence stemming from various positive indicators he has sensed recently.

“I’m feeling really optimistic about it,” Wallace expressed during Daytona 500 Media Day, smiling as he responded to questions. “I’ve been receiving numerous signs that this weekend will be a successful one, but I won’t reveal what they are. Our team has matured significantly since last year, and we’ve made great strides since the inception of 23XI and the No. 23 team. Entering this year, we’re more assured and focused. It’s all about paying attention to the details; I say that every year at Daytona 500 media day. We need to connect all the dots.”

As for the nature of these encouraging signs, Wallace might share more if he finds himself in Victory Lane by the weekend’s end. A large factor in his positive outlook is the effective partnership he has developed with his 23XI Racing team over the years.

“The communication has improved, and we’ve grown more confident in each other,” remarked Wallace. “Whether it’s Year 1 or Year 20, you learn something new about your colleagues every day. It’s about becoming more comfortable and integrating that knowledge into our work.”

Wallace is also convinced that 23XI Racing has the capability to challenge the dominant teams in the series, namely Hendrick, Gibbs, and Penske. The team made a significant mark by reaching the Championship 4 and capturing the regular season title with Tyler Reddick in 2024. Last season, they were among the few teams outside the Big 3 to secure wins.

“We aspire to establish ourselves in that elite category, and there’s a strong desire to achieve that,” stated Wallace. “We held an impactful leadership meeting recently that focused on key objectives, reflecting our collective ambitions. Setting high standards begins with maintaining a positive mindset, being punctual, and committing fully every day. The goal is continuous improvement.”

Wallace acknowledges the challenge posed by the established Big 3, who have a long-standing presence in the sport. The landscape is ever-evolving as key figures come and go, bringing their own philosophies. “We’re still in a growth phase, but we’ve accomplished noteworthy feats in a relatively short time. The focus must remain on pushing for further achievements.”

As the Daytona 500 approaches, Wallace’s confidence is palpable, setting the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating event in the NASCAR calendar.
