Switzerland Advances to World Cup Round of 16 with Victory over Algeria

Manzambi dazzles as Switzerland stroll into last 16 with win over Algeria

Dan Ndoye’s strike sails past Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane

Newcastle United’s pursuit of Johan Manzambi is intensifying, and for good reason. The 20-year-old Freiburg forward showcased his talent by dismantling the Algerian defense, providing an assist for Breel Embolo’s opening goal in a dominant victory that secured Switzerland’s spot in the last 16. Captain Granit Xhaka is attempting to manage rising expectations, yet Switzerland’s first World Cup knockout win since 1938 makes that task increasingly challenging.

This victory marks a significant achievement for the Swiss team. Guy Parmelin, the Swiss president, noted their recent strong form. Seated in the VIP area next to Gianni Infantino, he sported a striking red cap reminiscent of a style often associated with Donald Trump, although Parmelin’s headwear bore the slogan: “Switzerland great since 1291” instead of any political messaging.

Manzambi, who already had three goals in the tournament, added another assist, making him the youngest player to achieve five goal involvements in World Cup history. Since records began, only Thomas Müller has matched this milestone at such a young age. Switzerland’s head coach, Murat Yakin, praised Manzambi, stating, “He is a precious player for us, a brilliant footballer and he is just improving one match after the other,”

Algeria failed to heed the pre-match caution from the stadium announcer, who urged fans to keep an eye on Manzambi. The giant screen displayed his warm-up routine while emphasizing his impressive ranking in Fifa’s attacking power list, where he placed sixth behind stars like Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland.

The match began with Ruben Vargas sending a clever pass to Manzambi, who quickly took control of the ball. He advanced toward the byline, skillfully navigating past Aissa Mandi, and despite being off balance, delivered an accurate cross for Embolo to finish. Embolo celebrated with a quirky smile, highlighting Manzambi’s pivotal role in the goal.

Switzerland took command of the game and increased their lead just 48 seconds into the second half. Dan Ndoye finished expertly, converting Mandi’s clearance with his left foot before finding the far corner with his right, leaving goalkeeper Luca Zidane with little chance. Yakin, with his distinctive quiff and thick-rimmed glasses, savored the moment as Switzerland edged closer to the next round.

After a shaky start to the tournament with a frustrating draw against Qatar, Switzerland has now secured three consecutive victories, netting eight goals while conceding only twice. Vargas was dynamic on the left, and Ndoye posed a threat on the opposite side. Manzambi was substituted midway through the second half, having made a significant impact. Defensively, Switzerland was rarely challenged, as Algeria struggled to test goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. Houssem Aouar squandered an early opportunity, and Ibrahim Maza later missed a chance after a cross from Mahrez. After falling behind, Mahrez’s attempt lacked conviction, and the captain confirmed his retirement from international football, which will be a regret as he reflects on this match.

Switzerland almost extended their lead in the 81st minute when Denis Zakaria delivered a cross into the box. However, instead of scoring, Fabian Rieder misplayed the ball, allowing Zidane to make the save. Ultimately, Switzerland’s early lead proved sufficient, and they will now prepare for their upcoming match against either Colombia or Ghana in Vancouver on Tuesday.

Algeria’s head coach, Vladimir Petkovic, is familiar with the Swiss team, having spent seven years at the helm previously. He commented, “He has so many qualities as a player … It’s just so much fun to work with him and see him perform like that. He is really evolving.”
