Spain’s Unbeaten Streak Faces Major Challenge in World Cup Final

Unbeatables v untouchables? Spain’s run faces ultimate test in World Cup final

Spain appears to be in formidable form, having secured a 2-0 win over France, extending their unbeaten streak to 37 matches without a loss in normal or extra time. This achievement, as noted by Opta, matches the longest such run recorded by a European team. However, it is worth mentioning that Spain fell short in the final of the 2025 Nations League, losing to Portugal in a penalty shootout.

This impressive unbeaten streak parallels Italy’s record from October 2018 to September 2021, during which Roberto Mancini’s team triumphed at Euro 2020. Unlike Spain, Italy can claim a truly unbeaten record.

No South American team has matched Spain’s duration without defeat. Brazil managed 36 matches unbeaten from December 1993 to January 1996, securing a World Cup title during that period, while Argentina matched this record from July 2019 to November 2022. Although Argentina’s run was disrupted by a shocking defeat to Saudi Arabia in Qatar, their subsequent recovery to clinch the World Cup was a resounding statement.

Spain’s Historical Context

Spain’s current achievement is not surprising when considering their storied history in international football. The nation has been instrumental in six of the eleven recorded instances of a European team remaining unbeaten for at least 25 games. Notably, five of these unbeaten runs have occurred in the last 22 years, underscoring Spain’s dominance in the sport over the past two decades.

The depth of talent within the squad is evident as they can rely on players with exceptional records. Fabián Ruiz, for instance, has made 49 appearances for his country without experiencing a defeat, excluding shootouts. Despite his talents showcased in recent years, Ruiz does not rank among the top five in terms of minutes played during Spain’s current unbeaten run.

The standout player has been Marc Cucurella, with Unai Simón, Aymeric Laporte, Lamine Yamal, and Mikel Oyarzabal rounding out the top five players that manager Luis de la Fuente has relied upon most heavily.

Managerial Decisions and Match History

Throughout these 37 matches, Spain’s manager has utilized 62 different players, reflecting the wealth of talent available. This also raises questions about whether De la Fuente’s extensive rotations indicate indecision. However, among the 15 players who have made at least 20 appearances during this unbeaten stretch, ten started in the World Cup semi-final, while four came off the bench, and Martín Zubimendi was available as a substitute.

Spain’s unbeaten journey commenced after a 1-0 loss to Colombia at the London Stadium in March 2024. This streak includes victories over lesser European teams in qualification rounds, as well as eleven matches against formidable opponents, including Brazil, England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Portugal.

Argentina’s Recent Performance

Argentina currently boasts an unbeaten streak of 14 matches, having won every game. However, it is notable that they have suffered three defeats since Spain last faced a loss. The weight of recent performances continues to favor De la Fuente’s squad as they prepare for their ultimate test.
