At the Big Freeze event, Australia’s Governor-General Sam Mostyn delivered a heartfelt tribute to AFL icon Neale Daniher, who recently passed away. This marked Mostyn’s first appearance since Daniher’s death, a figure renowned for his advocacy in raising awareness for motor neurone disease (MND). Dressed in a split Essendon-Melbourne jersey and a Demons cap, he took the plunge at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) before an enthusiastic crowd of tens of thousands, all sporting blue MND beanies.
During the occasion, Mostyn shared his admiration for Daniher, emphasizing, “If everyone was like Daniher, Australia would be ‘unstoppable’ and a more caring, community-focused place.” This annual event is pivotal in generating funds for the FightMND charity, which Daniher founded after his diagnosis with the disease 13 years ago.
