CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
Could they really pull it off? Cape Verde came remarkably close to achieving the unimaginable. Hats off to Gianni Infantino for introducing an additional knockout round to the Geopolitics World Cup; it has indeed proven to be a valuable enhancement. While the group stage occasionally felt tedious, reminiscent of a dreary February Sunday filled with Scottish and South Korean disappointment, the added suspense has elevated the excitement. The final group stage match concluded with a thrilling contest that nearly produced one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.
The Cape Verdean team—referred to as Cabo Verde—pushed Argentina to the brink. Lionel Messi showcased his trademark brilliance with another stunning goal, but the ensuing 90 minutes delivered a rollercoaster of emotions. As one of the smallest nations to reach this stage—only Curaçao and Iceland have fewer inhabitants—their performance had Argentina and those who have bet on Messi sweating profusely. The 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, whose career highlights took place in Moldova, Slovakia, and Portugal’s lower leagues, nearly stole the spotlight from Messi. Skeptics who dismissed him as merely a novelty may want to reconsider their stance.
In the aftermath of the match, as Argentine players shed tears of relief, one undeniable takeaway emerged: Vozinha has etched his name into the annals of cult heroism, akin to legends like Pak Doo-ik, Teófilo Cubillas, and Roger Milla. This World Cup can now be remembered for more than just hydration breaks. However, Vozinha was not the sole star of the show; the exceptional goals from Deroy Duarte and Sidny Lopes Cabral kept Argentina on edge, forcing them into a state of discomfort, with the specter of disgrace looming over them. This match unfolded in Miami, Messi’s adopted city, a place where he has eclipsed local icons like Gloria Estefan and Dan Marino. The near-disaster of a homecoming celebration almost became a reality.
Setting aside the remarkable achievements of this island nation, which has sent many searching for maps off the west coast of Africa, the pressing question remains: how will Messi and his teammates bounce back from this grueling match? Their next challenge awaits on Tuesday in Atlanta against Egypt, who are also making their own history by advancing to the last 16, after a memorable penalty shootout against Australia, marked by Mat Ryan’s unfortunate oversight. Brought in as a special-teams substitute, Ryan failed to thwart any Egyptian kicks, leaving the original goalie, Patrick Beach, shaking his head in disbelief. Tony Popovic’s gamble ultimately backfired, serving as a cautionary tale for others—no funny business now, Thomas Tuchel. Regardless of what happens next, Cape Verde will be remembered forever; they will be celebrated as the true champions of the summer of 2026.

QUOTE OF THE DAY
“The schedule change hits like a kick in the stomach. We have to change the entire plan. I don’t like it at all”
said a frustrated Javier Aguirre after the announcement that the GWC last-16 kickoff featuring his co-hosts and England in Mexico City would be moved up by six hours due to the forecast of thunderstorms and flooding on Sunday evening. Eventually, FIFA decided to maintain the 6pm local time (1am Monday BST) start, but not before a chaotic period of confusion left both teams scrambling for clarity.
FOOTBALL DAILY LETTERS
“I have to say I just unsubscribed from Football Daily due to the constant negativity surrounding the GWC, both from the writers and in the published letters. I usually enjoy some snark, but this relentless seven-day-a-week version of the email is on another level. What a shame,” expressed Jeff Round.
“In honor of Gianni Infantino, I decided to implement my own hydration breaks while reading Football Daily. After several cans of Tin each day, it has almost become amusing,” remarked Martyn Shapter.
“Regarding yesterday’s News, Bits and Bobs (full email edition), education minister Jacqui Smith may have planned a disco nap before watching England, but her ex-husband is more famously a fan of jazz,” noted David Maddock.
“In response to Rick Costigan’s query about giving the USA USA USA their exclamation marks and dropping the A (from yesterday’s Football Daily letters), does Rick realize that their fans are already supporting his campaign? After returning from Boston, Miami, and Atlanta (the last stop was to visit Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthplace and resting place), I found the area packed with USA USA USA supporters brandishing signs and wearing T-shirts that said ‘Why not US?’ Does this count as the first mass movement in favor of a letter to the Football Daily email?” asked James Thomson.
“As a Scotland supporter, my interest in the GWC faded weeks ago, and based on past statistics, it won’t be rekindled until 2054. However, one positive I’ve taken away is the absence of players rolling around in apparent agony after the most trivial of tackles, once they realize the game continues around them. I look forward to seeing this policy continue when Stenhousemuir faces Montrose next season in Scottish Division 1 on a rainy Tuesday night at Ochilview Park,” said Stevie Ewens.
“At least a World Cup of Chocolate (Football Daily letters passim) would produce some different winners than the GWC. I’m betting on a Belgium versus Switzerland final after yet another disappointing semi-final exit for England,” predicted Chris Ware.
