Folarin Balogun Addresses Controversy Surrounding Ban Reversal

Folarin Balogun: Ban reversal caused ‘a lot of outside noise, and that’s hard to avoid’

Folarin Balogun, the United States striker, has expressed that he anticipated Donald Trump’s involvement in reversing his World Cup suspension would lead to significant controversy.

The Monaco forward received a red card during the US team’s round-of-32 clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, FIFA’s disciplinary committee later postponed the one-match ban for a year, enabling Balogun to play in the Americans’ last-16 defeat to Belgium.

This decision thrust Balogun into a fierce debate, and on Tuesday, the human rights organization FairSquare filed a complaint with the International Olympic Committee. The complaint alleges that FIFA president Gianni Infantino violated political neutrality rules due to his direct intervention on Balogun’s behalf and the US co-hosts.

Balogun’s Reflections on the Situation

In an interview with CBS, Balogun stated, “My initial reaction was I was happy to be back in the team, but when I kind of started to reflect, I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy, and I could almost see within my teammates a bit of nerves, because it’s something that is so unique.

“cause a lot of controversy”

Balogun maintains that the red card he received for a tackle on Tarik Muharemovic was unjust. He commented, “I was in shock. It wasn’t even a tackle. I was totally in shock, I think you could see my reaction, but I just had to accept the decision and just try to be there for my team.

“My initial reaction was I was happy to be back in the team, but when I kind of started to reflect, I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy, and I could almost see within my teammates a bit of nerves, because it’s something that is so unique. “But the closer we got to the game I tried to just focus as best as I could, but it was difficult. A lot of outside noise, and that’s hard to avoid.”

Allegations Against Infantino and FIFA

FairSquare has accused Infantino, who became an IOC member in 2020, of repeatedly violating the Olympic Charter and the IOC’s ethical guidelines, especially in his management of Balogun’s case.

According to reports, the chair of the disciplinary committee, Mohammad Al Kamali, made the pivotal decision to suspend the ban unilaterally, a move that marked a departure from previous disciplinary cases.

FIFA has yet to explain the rationale behind the suspension of Balogun’s ban. FairSquare’s complaint outlines five distinct violations of the IOC’s political neutrality regulations and presents evidence of two additional serious breaches, including the handling of Balogun’s situation.

Ongoing Concerns and Requests for Review

Last December, FairSquare lodged a similar complaint with FIFA’s ethics committee. They confirmed receipt of the complaint but have yet to receive any further updates.

The Norwegian Football Federation reached out to FIFA’s ethics committee last month, requesting a review of FairSquare’s allegations.

On June 29, fifty members of the European Parliament sent a letter to the same committee urging action on FairSquare’s complaint. FIFA and the IOC have been approached for comments regarding these developments.
