Merlin, the beloved pet duck donned in a miniature Mexico jersey, has captured hearts as a viral sensation and an unofficial mascot for the World Cup. On Monday, he had the opportunity to meet with Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum.

The charming duck made his entrance on stage during Sheinbaum’s regular morning press briefing, taking a seat typically reserved for ministers and officials. Unperturbed by the grand occasion, Merlin quacked a few times, much to the delight of those present.

“We feel very honoured to be here with the president, it is an honour for us to stand before you and for the whole world to see the beautiful side of Mexico,” expressed Karla Gómez, the proud owner of Merlin.

Merlin first rose to fame during street celebrations following the opening match of the World Cup, where the co-hosts triumphed over South Africa 2-0 on June 11. The duck was seen mingling with jubilant fans on the busy Reforma avenue in the capital, quickly becoming one of the standout figures of the tournament.

Gómez shared her aspirations to register Merlin as a trademark, hoping that his newfound popularity could provide support for their family, particularly for her eldest son who faces mental health challenges.

President Sheinbaum announced that Merlin’s family would receive some form of assistance, though she withheld specifics. “Today we brought the family that has Merlin the duck as their pet, because he has been a symbol of the World Cup, a symbol of what Mexican families stand for, of who we are as Mexican families, and that is above all else, it is what the world is seeing from Mexico today,” she stated.

Gómez affectionately referred to Merlin as the “boss” of her street beverage vending business. She revealed that while he maintains a balanced diet, he enjoys a pork taco every Sunday. At two years old, Merlin was welcomed into the family as a gift from a customer and is often seen wearing shoes to protect his webbed feet, as he loves to walk.
