Haaland Celebrates as Norway Prepares for World Cup Clash Against England

Haaland beats his own drum as Norway get set for England epic | Paul MacInnes

Erling Haaland reserves his most entertaining moments for Snapchat. After scoring two crucial goals to lead Norway past Brazil in the World Cup, the national team’s star forward shared clips of what appeared to be a lively celebration aboard the team bus. Haaland was animated, moving through the aisles, singing a catchy yet somewhat forgotten summer hit from French DJ Kungs, with the lyrics proclaiming, “more comfortable playing in small areas”

Norway will eventually have to return home, possibly after their quarter-final match against England in Miami on Saturday. Nevertheless, it is evident that the players, fans, and their superstar are making the most of their time in the United States. From participating in a traditional longboat rowing ceremony to donning cowboy attire, such as a T-shirt emblazoned with “Y’all can kiss my Dallas,” and Haaland striking a playful pose with hands on hips and a bemused smile, the team is enjoying every moment.

The coaches at this World Cup are keen on crafting narratives that inspire. For the United States, the mantra is “why not US?”, encouraging belief in their potential. France emphasizes team cohesion, perhaps as a counterbalance to its history of individualism, while England focuses on resilience against adversity. Amidst these themes, Norway stands out for their commitment to maintaining positivity, which is evidently contagious.

This does not imply that Norway is lacking seriousness on the field; quite the contrary, as Brazil discovered. While their overall performance statistics are modest, Norway excels in specific areas: they rank 20th for average possession, 14th for touches in the opponent’s box, and 38th in interceptions out of 48 teams. However, they are fourth in creating significant scoring opportunities and fifth in expected goals (xG). They demonstrate organization, focus, and a distinct style of play aimed at maximizing Haaland’s impact.

Norway is guided by Ståle Solbakken, a coach deeply attuned to the national identity, who also possesses significant coaching experience, notably with FC Copenhagen in the Champions League. His tactical acumen was on display during the match against Brazil, where his initial lineup effectively mitigated Brazilian threats by controlling possession. At halftime, he opted to enhance his team’s offensive capabilities by substituting both wingers, bringing in Oscar Bobb and Andreas Schjelderup for Alexander Sørloth and Antonio Nusa, respectively, to utilize players better suited for tight spaces.

The goal-scoring strategy aimed to creatively leverage their key asset, allowing for more time to develop opportunities for Haaland. The first goal, a powerful header, resulted from an excellent dribble and cross by Schjelderup, who was given extra room thanks to David Møller Wolfe’s overlapping run from left-back. This space and timing allowed for another significant chance, which Haaland capitalized on while outmaneuvering Gabriel Magalhães.

As Norway prepares for the challenge against England, disrupting the pathways to their wide players will likely be a priority for the English team. The Miami heat, expected to exceed 30C (86F), will make the match conditions different from those typically seen in the Premier League. England is well aware of Haaland’s capabilities and familiar with much of the Norwegian roster. Following their recent success at the Azteca, they will enter the match with confidence. Conversely, Norway will play fearlessly, having already surpassed expectations, and will do so with smiles on their faces.

One additional statistic offers insight into Haaland and Norway’s performance. Among the 48 teams, Norway ranks third in the number of significant chances missed. This statistic reflects their ability to generate opportunities, but it also underscores that Haaland is not infallible.

Haaland typically has a few scoring opportunities per match, and, as observed during his recent season with Manchester City, he sometimes misses easier chances than those he successfully converts. He is fallible but formidable. Regardless of the match outcome, his demeanor and approach will remain steady and composed. Haaland will continue to exhibit humility until the tournament concludes, and, just like in the aftermath of Sunday’s victory, he will be celebrating in his own unique way.
