Chris Gayle Expresses Confidence in Denny Hamlin’s 2026 NASCAR Aspirations

Ryan Preece, RFK Racing

Denny Hamlin commenced the new racing season amidst a challenging off-season by achieving a notable top-five finish at the Cookout Clash held at Bowman Gray Stadium on Wednesday evening.

While the race was fraught with turbulence, Hamlin managed to navigate through the disarray more effectively than many of his competitors, ultimately securing a top-five position. This performance marked his initial race of the season, during which he will need to manage a previously injured shoulder that has undergone surgery, with the season running until November.

Given the circumstances, the outcome was satisfactory.

The rust was palpable, particularly in the first 160 laps, but as conditions improved, our performance did as well,

Hamlin remarked following the event.

I felt like a monkey trying to handle a football during the wet conditions, but as the race progressed, I started to find my rhythm. Overall, it served as a decent warm-up, and now we need to focus on the upcoming season.

His crew chief, Chris Gayle, expressed unwavering confidence in Hamlin’s ability to regain his competitive edge.

Absolutely,

Gayle stated.

I have complete faith that he will reach that point. It’s been quite a rollercoaster for him during the off-season, with numerous challenges to overcome.

Gayle acknowledged that Hamlin’s journey would require time to fully recover. He noted,

The Clash was a chance for all of us to shake off the rust. After three months away, it’s a unique setup that doesn’t allow for a complete return to form in just one race.

Hamlin’s tumultuous off-season has been well-documented; he faced a heartbreaking loss in the championship race last November at Phoenix and later achieved a favorable resolution in his lawsuit against NASCAR for 23XI Racing, in conjunction with Front Row Motorsports. However, he also experienced the tragic loss of his father in a house fire in December.

Gayle mentioned his supportive approach, stating that he has made himself available to Hamlin while allowing him the space to manage his own affairs in the past month.

Honestly, I’ve given him the freedom to handle things his way and to reach out when necessary. I might send a text now and then, but I try not to intrude,

Gayle explained.

Our conversations have focused on keeping things professional, and if he wants to talk, I’m here for him. We’ve mostly respected each other’s space, which is perfectly fine. As we return to the track, that dynamic may evolve a bit.

As the season progresses, both Hamlin and Gayle are prepared to face the challenges ahead with focus and determination.
