Following France’s triumph over Morocco in the World Cup quarter-finals, clashes erupted between police and football fans in central London early Friday morning. According to authorities, the situation escalated into what they described as “The incident then escalated with the group throwing bottles and setting off fireworks,”
One police officer sustained injuries, and four individuals were detained amidst the chaos. Law enforcement officials reported that the unrest began when fans blocked traffic on Edgware Road, near Hyde Park.
A police spokesperson remarked, “One officer was taken to hospital for head injuries, it is believed he had been hit by a glass bottle.” Images circulating on social media depicted a chaotic scene with fans hurling objects at the police.
On a different note, Raphaël Jucobin discussed the contrasting play styles of France’s teams from 2022 to 2026. “In the space of just a single tournament cycle, Didier Deschamps has embraced a vastly different style, one based on a freeform attacking line. As a one-two punch from Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé sent the team into this year’s semi-final, the 57-year-old’s tactical reinvention was once again vindicated.” he noted.
Following the match, both managers—Didier Deschamps and Mohamed Ouahbi—shared their thoughts on the game, with Ouahbi expressing admiration for the French side.
Kylian Mbappé, who scored the opening goal and contributed to the second, raised concerns when he was substituted with just 13 minutes left on the clock. The striker experienced some “What is a defence supposed to do? Perhaps France have gone too early. Perhaps they will not be able to sustain this form. But if they do, it is going to take something remarkable to prevent them winning their third World Cup in 28 years.” in his ankle and was seen icing it. Nonetheless, his condition appeared to improve by full-time as he made a brief jog onto the pitch, energizing the French supporters. He is not expected to miss the upcoming semi-final.
In the meantime, here’s Jonathan Wilson’s insightful match report from Boston. “What is a defence supposed to do? Perhaps France have gone too early. Perhaps they will not be able to sustain this form. But if they do, it is going to take something remarkable to prevent them winning their third World Cup in 28 years,” he observed.
Good morning/afternoon/evening! With France confirmed as the first semi-finalist, expectations are high for Didier Deschamps’ side. What initially seemed a challenging quarter-final transformed into a comfortable 2-0 victory over Morocco, solidifying their status as tournament favorites.
