On Monday evening, Christopher Nolan’s three-hour cinematic journey, The Odyssey, premiered in London. Just a day later, 15,000 spectators at Wimbledon experienced a similar epic on the tennis court. The protagonist was none other than Novak Djokovic, embarking on his quest for a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title. The match was filled with tension, dramatic shifts, and moments that had the Centre Court crowd leaping to their feet in excitement.
After an intense five hours and 15 minutes of remarkable tennis, it was Djokovic who emerged victorious, defeating Félix Auger-Aliassime with a score of 7-6 (10), 3-6, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4).
When asked about his ability to secure the win just before the 11 PM curfew, Djokovic remarked, “With my racket and a lot of heart. Towards the end it was anyone’s match. But these are still the moments I still play tennis for. “I wish it was the final so I didn’t have to worry about how the body will feel tomorrow but I am happy. I was telling the kids to go to sleep after the fourth set but I am glad they didn’t listen. Because honestly it was one of the best matches I have been involved in on this court in my career.”
Reflecting on the match, he added, “I’m going to look at all the numbers when I finish my career,”
The opening set alone spanned 79 minutes, setting the tone for the battle ahead. Early on, the match showcased a display of strength and skill, but at 4-4, Djokovic experienced a moment of concern after slipping while executing a backhand. The crowd held its breath as he called for a trainer, but he quickly regained his composure and continued to perform at a high level.
Djokovic eventually took control, winning the first set in a lengthy tie-break 12-10, thanks to Auger-Aliassime’s misfired forehand volley.
As the match progressed, both players maintained strong serves until Djokovic faced a setback at 3-4, where a double fault led to his first service break. Auger-Aliassime had a chance to level the match but faltered under pressure, allowing Djokovic to break back and regain momentum.
One of the match’s highlight moments occurred when Auger-Aliassime sent Djokovic wide with a drop shot, only for Djokovic to respond with an exceptional flick return. Despite Auger-Aliassime scrambling to hit a lob, Djokovic countered with a powerful smash, leading to an eruption of cheers from the crowd.
Shortly thereafter, the match was tied at one set apiece, prompting the decision to close the roof at 7:40 PM, even with 90 minutes of daylight remaining.
This change seemed to benefit Djokovic, who began striking the ball with increased power and precision. Despite missing three break points in the first game of the third set, Djokovic secured a crucial break that helped him win the set.
With an early break in the fourth set, it appeared Auger-Aliassime, 15 years Djokovic’s junior, was at a disadvantage. However, he swiftly responded by breaking back, showcasing his resilience.
Even as the match intensified, Djokovic seemed to relish the challenge. Following an impressive drop shot from Auger-Aliassime, he shook his head in disbelief yet could not suppress a smile, even as the Canadian took the fourth set in a tie-break.
As the two continued to exchange powerful shots, the atmosphere in Centre Court became electric. At 10:18 PM, the crowd rose to applaud both competitors, with Djokovic leading 4-3. Djokovic then unleashed a stunning backhand winner, which was promptly answered by Auger-Aliassime’s forehand winner on the next point, exemplifying the match’s high stakes.
As play continued, Djokovic managed to hold his lead, with Auger-Aliassime in pursuit. However, when it came to the final-set tie-break, Djokovic found another gear.
His defensive capabilities, even after five grueling hours, were remarkable as he fended off powerful shots, racing to a 9-4 lead before ultimately claiming the match. With this victory, Djokovic has reached an unprecedented 15 Wimbledon semi-finals, including eight consecutively, another record to his name.
As he prepares to face Jannik Sinner in the next round, Djokovic is determined to extend his remarkable journey. “But right now it is all business.” he stated. “But right now it is all business.”
