France Edges Paraguay in Controversial Philadelphia Match

France deliver knockout punch to Paraguay in the Battle of Philadelphia

Jesse Marsch and his Canada players applaud the fans

wrote JJ Zucal.

The clash between France and Paraguay at the Geopolitics World Cup in Philadelphia was marred by questionable officiating and physical play, culminating in a 1-0 victory for the French. The match, described by some as a disgraceful exhibition, lacked the intensity of past infamous encounters, notably the Battle of Santiago.

While the French managed to keep their composure, Paraguay’s tactics leaned heavily on aggression with players like Andrés Cubas and Juan José Cáceres targeting key French stars. Remarkably, no Paraguayan players received cards despite their aggressive strategy, contrasting sharply with the three French players cautioned during the match. The officiating by Ilgiz Tantashev from Uzbekistan appeared unclear, as even a crucial penalty awarded to France after a foul on Désiré Doué drew suspicion.

During the match, Paraguay’s goalkeeper, Orlando Gill, attempted to unnerve Kylian Mbappé, who ultimately scored the decisive penalty. Following the goal, Mbappé, displaying a mix of satisfaction and defiance, refused to shake hands with Gill, who later expressed his frustration, saying, “Good evening. The game you are about to see is the most stupid, appalling, disgusting and disgraceful exhibition of football in the history of the game.”

Reflecting on the match, Mbappé remarked, “Since he didn’t pay me any attention, I lost my temper,” His comments highlighted the contrasting styles on display, as the French team exhibited a more polished approach.

Quotes of the Day

“They thought we’d show up in tuxedos to play, but we know how to play dirty football too,”

– Jesse Marsch expresses confidence in his Canada squad despite their loss to Morocco.

“We won and we were better than them.”

“We totally controlled the match. We were the ones more likely to win the game, but goals change games so they could sit back. But overall in the match we were better than them. If you’d said [before the game] we were going to play like that … you’d think we were going to win the match”

“It takes some nerve to say that when you lose 3-0”

commented Anthony Alessandrini.

“With respect to Mr Round (yesterday’s Letters), I have read plenty of ‘positive’ intros from Football Daily during the GWC, but Football Daily never would have lasted as long as it has without the ‘snark’ from we 1,057 pedants” added Phil Taverner.
