Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo May Compete at World Cups Beyond Age 40

Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates a goal.

The prospect of breaking Just Fontaine’s long-standing World Cup record of 13 goals, set in 1958, seems increasingly likely this summer. The elite forwards in today’s game are driving each other to new heights, making it a privilege for fans to witness their performances simultaneously.

With the unique skill set required for modern goal-scoring, it is plausible that we will see more players extending their careers into their 40s. This could mean that icons like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo might participate in another World Cup.

While speed over short distances remains essential, modern football emphasizes positioning, instincts, and timing. These attributes dictate a player’s awareness of where to be in relation to the ball. The top strikers possess this mental acuity, enhancing their ability to navigate congested penalty areas through years of experience.

Moreover, these athletes are taking exceptional care of their bodies, demonstrating the benefits of a disciplined lifestyle. Messi, at 39, and Ronaldo, at 41, exemplify this trend, while Robert Lewandowski, who is absent from this World Cup, continues to excel at 37. Likewise, Harry Kane, 32, maintains a professional regimen, reflected in the fitness of emerging stars like Erling Haaland, who embodies the commitment of a modern athlete.

Brazilian legend Marta, still scoring at 40, is a prime example of longevity in sports. Many senior players are often dismissed too quickly, a tendency rooted in older perceptions of athleticism. Today’s athletes benefit from advancements in training, nutrition, and recovery, starkly contrasting the lifestyles of players like Diego Maradona.

The playing styles within this group of strikers vary significantly. Messi frequently positions himself around central areas and within the six-yard box during the initial phases of play. His decision-making and execution elevate him beyond mere goal-scoring; he has transformed into a creator, adept at drawing defenders and enabling teammates to exploit space.

Messi’s knack for generating moments of brilliance has positioned Argentina among the tournament’s top teams alongside France. His free-kick against Jordan, where he cleverly deceived the goalkeeper, underscores his strategic mindset.

Interestingly, Messi often conserves energy, running less than many of his teammates. Observing him reveals a player who frequently defies conventional flow; while the ball moves in one direction, he strategically positions himself elsewhere, anticipating the play. This exceptional quality sets him apart.

Ronaldo, on the other hand, plays a more traditional No. 9 role, excelling in finishing and aerial threats. While I have long admired Ronaldo, my appreciation for Messi has deepened over the past four years due to his leadership and ability to consistently score and create goals.

The debate surrounding Messi versus Ronaldo is somewhat trivial. Instead, we should celebrate the extraordinary talents of both players, who have graced the pitch for such an extended period. Should future talents like Haaland, Kylian Mbappé, or Lamine Yamal face similar comparisons? Let’s instead appreciate their individual skills.

Some argue that leaving European leagues diminishes a player’s caliber. However, Major League Soccer has proven competitive, as evidenced by Messi’s remarkable tally of 29 goals in 28 games during the 2025 regular season. Watching him perform has been a joy.

I had the opportunity to take my son, Harry, to see Messi play in Denver before a crowd of 65,000. Witnessing him score with a stunning shot into the top corner left my son in awe, creating a lasting memory for him.

My son reads about Messi, enjoys video games where he plays as him, and seeing him live was an unforgettable moment. I hope he develops the same passion for the World Cup that my father instilled in me, and this tournament has certainly been infectious.

Confidently, I predicted a record goal tally for this tournament, particularly with the inclusion of an extra round. The top players have performed brilliantly, drawing large crowds. Factors such as improved video assistant referee protocols and swifter decision-making have enhanced the game, allowing for more physicality in play. Quick throw-ins have also become a focus.

All these elements contribute to increased ball-in-play time, and with some of football’s greatest talents showcasing their abilities, fans are truly being treated to exceptional performances.
