Steam Achieves Unprecedented $1.6 Billion in December, Driven by Arc Raiders

The year 2025 may have presented a blend of challenges, yet it proved to be a remarkable period for the gaming industry. For PC enthusiasts, the sheer volume of blockbuster titles has likely kept them occupied long after the year concluded, and they’re certainly not alone in this experience. Indeed, an analysis from a prominent industry group suggests that December 2025 marked a record-breaking month for Steam in terms of revenue.

According to the analysis, the platform welcomed over 100 million users, collectively generating a staggering $1.6 billion in revenue last month. This substantial figure positions December as the most lucrative holiday season for Steam to date. The report highlights that this represents a 22.7% increase compared to December 2024 and surpasses the pandemic-boosted high of $1.4 billion recorded in December 2020.

Furthermore, the report identifies Arc Raiders as the season’s second-highest performer, trailing only the perennial favorite Counter-Strike 2. The game achieved remarkable success, selling an impressive 1.2 million copies between December 21 and January 4 alone. As stated in the report, “the ARC Raiders train shows no signs of slowing down,” with total sales reaching 12 million copies. Notably, 250,000 of these sales occurred on Boxing Day, with nearly 3.2 million players logging in, half of whom accessed the game via Steam.

While there are many insights and estimates in the analysis, two key points stand out. Despite facing potential competition from platforms like Epic Games Store and various controversies, Steam appears to be thriving more than ever. Additionally, any skepticism surrounding the game’s appeal to casual gamers has been decisively quashed by the enthusiastic response from players, particularly from the innovative team at Embark.

Steam’s sustained supremacy in the gaming marketplace is hardly surprising, given its user base exceeds that of Canada. It seems likely that this success will lead to yet another luxury yacht in Gabe Newell’s future.
