Spectacular Performances by Root and Brook Propel England to ODI Series Victory

England captain Harry Brook and Joe Root embrace

In a thrilling conclusion to the ODI series, England triumphed over Sri Lanka by 53 runs, thanks to outstanding unbeaten centuries from Joe Root and Harry Brook. The match, held at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, saw England post a formidable total of 357-3, securing their series victory with a 2-1 win.

After a sluggish start, Root showcased his mastery with a composed innings, marking his 20th ODI century. He formed a significant partnership of 126 runs with Jacob Bethell before Brook joined him in the 32nd over. Root’s century came off 108 balls, while Brook, in a remarkable display of power hitting, reached his century in just 57 balls, completing an unbroken partnership of 191 runs.

Brook’s celebration echoed the antics of WWE star Steve ‘Stone Cold’ Austin, mimicking the iconic beer-smashing gesture after reaching three figures. England’s innings concluded with Brook scoring a personal best of 136, while Root contributed 111 runs, leading to their highest ODI score in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s chase began explosively, with 104 runs scored in the powerplay despite losing three wickets. Pathum Nissanka, who scored a brisk 50 off 24 balls, fell victim to a catch in the deep, prompting England to gradually regain control of the match.

Pavan Rathnayake fought valiantly for Sri Lanka, achieving his first international century with a score of 121 off 104 balls, but lacked support from other batsmen. As wickets fell around him, Rathnayake’s effort ultimately fell short as he became the last wicket to fall, bowled by Sam Curran.

Root Sets the Stage for Brook’s Explosive Finish

The contrasting styles of Root and Brook were a sight to behold. Root’s innings was characterized by finesse and timing, expertly navigating a challenging pitch. His approach laid the groundwork for Brook to unleash his aggressive batting.

Despite difficulties faced by the England side in recent ODIs, this innings was a masterclass in constructing a 50-over format. While patience was essential, especially after early wickets fell, Root’s composed batting steadied the innings, allowing Brook to accelerate later on.

With 58 singles and a total of nine boundaries plus a six in his innings, Root demonstrated his ability to manipulate the field and rotate strikes effectively. His calm demeanor kept the Sri Lankan bowlers at bay, creating the perfect opportunity for Brook to shift gears.

Brook reached his half-century with a six and moved swiftly to his century, leaving Sri Lankan bowlers struggling to contain his explosive batting. He amassed 11 fours and nine sixes, a reminder of his immense talent.

Bowlers Maintain Composure for Series Victory

Chasing a daunting target of 358 was a monumental task for Sri Lanka, as it would have set records at the R Premadasa Stadium. The team’s ambitions were evident from the outset, with Nissanka nearly catching Duckett off a risky shot.

Sri Lanka needed to apply pressure without making mistakes, a challenge they approached with an aggressive mindset. However, the loss of three key wickets during the powerplay hindered their progress.

England’s bowlers remained resolute, particularly after Adil Rashid dismissed Asalanka, bringing stability to the innings. The pitch began to slow down, favoring spin bowlers who managed to extract more turn than their Sri Lankan counterparts.

Rashid, along with Liam Dawson and Will Jacks, each claimed two wickets, effectively controlling the flow of the game. Despite Rathnayake’s efforts, the scoreboard pressure proved too much for Sri Lanka to overcome.

With this victory, England concluded Sri Lanka’s unbeaten streak at home in ODI series, alleviating concerns about the need to qualify for the upcoming World Cup in 2027. Looking ahead, England embarks on a T20 series starting on January 30, buoyed by this significant ODI achievement.
