Snoop Dogg, Selfies, and Team GB Curlers Maintain Perfect Record

Snoop Dogg captured much of the spotlight at the Cortina Curling Stadium on Friday morning, yet Team Great Britain’s duo showcased two impressive performances, continuing their flawless streak in the Winter Olympics mixed doubles competition.

The iconic rapper, who was present in the luxurious Italian alpine resort as a motivational figure for Team USA and an “honorary coach,” even took a turn on the ice himself for a small audience after the morning matches.

Afterward, the 54-year-old requested a selfie with curlers Jen Dodds and Bruce Mouat, who had just secured a victory against Sweden. “He asked for a picture with us, so I’m feeling pretty pleased right now,” Mouat shared. Dodds added that Snoop mentioned he had heard about Bruce.

The highly regarded Swedish team, who had previously defeated them for bronze in 2022, fell 7-4 to the British duo. Following this, the underdog South Korean team suffered a more substantial defeat, ending 8-2, which left Team GB boasting five wins in five matches.

This impressive performance places the Scottish pair at the top of the standings, nearing a spot in the semi-finals and a potential shot at a medal. Observers of the sport believe that achieving six victories out of the nine round-robin matches could secure a place in Monday’s final four, and they are now just one win away from that goal.

On Saturday, they will face two challenging opponents, starting with Canada at 09:05 GMT, followed by the undefeated United States at 13:35 – both matches will be broadcast live.

During the match against South Korea, it marked the fifth time in less than 40 hours that Mouat and Dodds had taken to the ice, yet they showed no signs of fatigue. Similar to their morning game, they quickly established a commanding lead.

The Koreans, who had not won any of their first three games, were given the last throw advantage, but Britain managed to steal three points in the opening two ends, creating a lead they would not surrender.

“Jen and Bruce were exceptional once again,” commented a former Olympic gold medallist. “They maintained relentless pressure, leaving Korea with no opportunity to recover.”

Mouat has been vocal about his frustrations during the initial three uneven matches in the Dolomite mountains, but he stepped up his game on Friday. Partner Dodds has consistently performed at a high level throughout the competition.

Only Sweden’s Isabella Wranaa had statistically outperformed Dodds in the first two days, but she struggled in this match, just as Kim Seon-yeong of South Korea did. Dodds’ two points helped establish a 5-1 lead at halftime, and three additional steals as Kim faltered widened the gap with only two ends remaining.

At that point, victory was all but assured. When the Koreans could only secure one point in the second to last end, the players shook hands, confirming the outcome.

“Five victories out of five is an impressive feat, but tomorrow presents a significant challenge,” Wright noted. “Canada has lost only once, to the USA, while the USA remains undefeated.”

Meanwhile, up in the Italian Alps, snowboarder Txema Mazet-Brown made his Olympic debut at the Livigno Snow Park, being the first Team GB athlete to compete. The 19-year-old finished 21st in the big air qualifying round with a score of 151.75, with only the top 12 advancing to Saturday’s final.

“I’m pleased with my performance; it could have been cleaner on one run, but overall, I’m satisfied,” Mazet-Brown stated. “Standing up there, you realize this is one of the premier events globally. I feel a sense of pride. It’s a bit nerve-wracking, but that’s a positive feeling – it’s truly special.”

Mazet-Brown is set to return to the course on February 16 for the slopestyle qualifying, an event for which he expresses he prepared more thoroughly.
