Snooker Icon John Virgo Passes Away at 79

John Virgo

Renowned snooker figure and BBC commentator John Virgo has passed away at the age of 79, leaving behind a legacy in the world of cue sports.

With a professional career spanning 18 years, Virgo achieved notable success, winning the UK Championship and reaching the semi-finals of the World Championship in 1979. His impact on the sport extended beyond his playing days.

Virgo is perhaps most recognized for his television presence, where he co-hosted the popular snooker series Big Break alongside comedian Jim Davidson from 1991 until 2002.

After retiring from competitive play in 1994, he transitioned into a commentary role with the BBC, continuing to engage audiences with his insights and humor. His most recent commentary occurred just 17 days prior, during the Masters final where Kyren Wilson overcame John Higgins.

As a commentator, Virgo was cherished for his memorable catchphrase, “Where’s the cue ball going?” which he often used when a player faced a potential foul.

Mark Selby, a four-time world champion, expressed his sorrow, stating, “So sad to hear the news of the passing of John Virgo! Such a great guy and a huge character! He will be greatly missed! RIP JV.”

A statement from World Snooker reflected the collective grief, noting, “Everyone at World Snooker Tour is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of legendary snooker player and broadcaster John Virgo.”

Born in Salford in 1946, Virgo leaves behind two children, Gary and Brooke-Leah, who will carry forward his memory.

Virgo’s contributions to snooker, both on and off the table, have made a lasting impression, and he will be remembered for his significant role in the sport’s history.
