Slot Celebrates Salah’s Comeback on a Crucial Evening

Mo Salah

Arne Slot has fond recollections of his time in Marseille, particularly the unforgettable moment in 2022 when his Feyenoord team clinched a spot in the Europa Conference League final.

As he prepared for this week’s match at the iconic Stade Velodrome, Slot reflected on those significant memories. However, he was also ungraciously probed about Xabi Alonso’s potential move to Liverpool.

Amid speculations regarding the future of Liverpool’s manager, his squad delivered a classic European away performance, overcoming Marseille and joining the ranks of teams like Eintracht Frankfurt and Inter Milan that they have bested this season.

Liverpool’s current unbeaten streak stands at 13 matches (7 wins, 6 draws) across all competitions, making it the longest continuous run among teams in Europe’s top five leagues. This achievement alone deserves recognition, especially considering they have not faced defeat since November.

For Slot, the match marked a significant victory, as it was the first time since November 4 that Mohamed Salah started for Liverpool and they emerged victorious, a win against Real Madrid in the Champions League. The recent tensions following Salah’s interview at Leeds seem to have been resolved, allowing both the player and manager to focus on the club’s progress.

Both Slot and Salah are essential to each other’s success. Prior to the match, Slot mentioned to TNT Sports, “During the times I opted not to play him, I was trying different strategies. We’ve lacked goals despite dominating possession. If there’s anyone in Liverpool’s history capable of scoring, it’s Mo Salah.”

Although Salah did not extend his record of 46 Champions League goals for Liverpool—missing a clear chance in the second half—Liverpool’s assured play in a 4-2-2-2 formation undoubtedly pleased Slot and may influence his tactics in the coming weeks.

“It speaks volumes about his professionalism that he can be away for over a month with a different team and still be fit enough to play a full match for us after just one day of training,” Slot stated. “He came very close to scoring, which is typically expected from him, but it didn’t impact us negatively as we managed to net three goals.”

With Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai supporting Hugo Ekitike and Salah, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez were instrumental in providing width on the flanks.

The two new signings excelled in their roles, with Frimpong’s dynamism allowing Salah to concentrate on offensive responsibilities, although the Egyptian still worked hard defensively.

“Salah integrated seamlessly into Liverpool’s formation,” noted Steven Warnock on Match of the Day. “To maximize his potential, continuity and consistency are crucial, so I believe Slot will utilize him in this manner again. This approach alleviates his defensive duties, allowing him to conserve energy and remain a greater threat.”

“Tonight, he seemed to constantly be positioned behind his defender, waiting for opportunities, and he had two excellent chances that he could have capitalized on more effectively.”

Both full-backs had impressive performances, contributing significantly in both defensive and attacking phases. They maintained high positions to provide Liverpool with width while also fulfilling their defensive responsibilities admirably.

The ongoing challenge for Slot and Liverpool lies in effectively countering teams that set up defensively. Despite former captain Steven Gerrard’s advice to stop emphasizing low blocks, Slot is acutely aware of the need to improve in this aspect.

“I’m very happy for him. It’s not easy to perform under such pressure,” Gerrard remarked. “His tactical decisions were spot on this evening. He deserves commendation but should refrain from discussing low blocks. Teams have been employing that strategy against Liverpool since my playing days.”

“I understand the reason for our inconsistency, and it primarily stems from the difference between facing an open game compared to a low block,” Slot explained to TNT Sports. “Tonight’s match was different, as both teams sought to press and play out from the back. Our inconsistency arises from our difficulties against low blocks.”

While it’s unlikely Bournemouth will adopt a low block strategy this Saturday, Andoni Iraola might consider Liverpool’s recent challenges and adjust accordingly.

However, for now, this evening belongs to Liverpool and its supporters. It marks yet another memorable chapter for Slot in the beautiful south of France.
