Rosenior Takes Responsibility for Sanchez’s Errors as Chelsea Falls to Arsenal

Robert Sanchez puts his hand to his mouth after a mistake against Arsenal

Following a narrow 3-2 defeat to Arsenal in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals, Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has stepped forward to take responsibility for goalkeeper Robert Sanchez’s blunders during the match. The 28-year-old Spanish international was under scrutiny for his role in conceding the first two goals at Stamford Bridge.

Rosenior disclosed that his side was grappling with issues related to injuries and illnesses, which may have impacted their performance. Sanchez struggled to secure Declan Rice’s corner that led to the opening goal by Ben White in the seventh minute, and later, a cross from the Arsenal full-back slipped through his fingers, allowing Viktor Gyokeres to score in the 49th minute.

Although Martin Zubimendi also scored for Arsenal, Chelsea’s substitute Alejandro Garnacho netted twice, keeping the contest alive for the Blues.

Rosenior’s Tactical Approach

In his first home match as Chelsea’s head coach, Rosenior expressed his intent to implement a fresh tactical strategy tailored for Sanchez. He emphasized the collective nature of team errors and stated, “It’s a team goal, it’s not just on Rob [Sanchez].” He noted that he is introducing Sanchez to new responsibilities and assured him that any mistakes made are ultimately his responsibility.

“He made a spectacular save in the second half that could have potentially ended the tie for us. I believe he will grow in his understanding of the role,” Rosenior remarked. He acknowledged that this was Sanchez’s first match under his management and that he has had limited time to work with the player.

Rosenior acknowledged the need for immediate results while also fostering long-term improvement for the season. “There are many positives to take from Rob’s performance. I am here to support my players, and if they err while trying to execute my instructions, that falls on me,” he added.

Injuries and Illnesses Impact the Squad

Despite the defeat being his first as manager, Rosenior found several encouraging aspects in his players’ performances. He pointed out that the team faced significant challenges due to various injuries and illnesses while competing against a formidable opponent. “We played against a very strong team and were missing several key players,” he explained.

Players like Cole Palmer, Reece James, and Malo Gusto were unable to participate due to late fitness assessments, while Moises Caicedo was unavailable due to suspension. Illness also sidelined Liam Delap and Jamie Gittens.

Regarding Palmer’s condition, Rosenior stated, “He experienced a minor thigh strain. If we rush him back too soon, he could face a lengthy recovery.” He added that James sustained a significant hip injury but remained hopeful for his return by Saturday.

Looking Ahead

Rosenior also mentioned, “Both Gittens and Delap experienced dangerously high fevers just hours before the match. I hope they can recover quickly and be available for Saturday’s game.”

He maintained that Chelsea showed resilience against an Arsenal team that has only lost twice this season across all competitions. Rosenior believes his team still has a chance to overturn the deficit in the second leg scheduled for February 3 at the Emirates Stadium.

“We faced one of the best pressing teams in Europe today, and we were missing a lot of key players. I was proud of the players’ courage to execute my game plan. We have played two matches in the last six days, and while I’m not asking for time, I know this group is capable of winning now,” he concluded.

Rosenior reiterated his commitment to imprinting his style on the team while ensuring that results remain a priority. He hopes that the fans will witness the team’s progression while striving for victories.
