A significant theft has struck a gaming store, resulting in the loss of rare Pokémon cards valued at £65,000. The owner characterized this incident as a devastating blow to his enterprise.

Phillip Hobbs utilized a hammer to break into the Badzgaming shop located in Cwmbran, Torfaen. In addition to the cards, he also stole £1,700 in cash before making his escape on a stolen motorcycle.

Although some items were eventually recovered, shop owner Alex Badham reported that numerous cards suffered damage from petrol during the attempted getaway, rendering them nearly worthless.

Badham expressed concern over the future of his business, heavily relying on the outcome of his insurance claim. He stated, “A loss of this size is a killer.”

The Evolution of Pokémon Card Collecting

Pokémania captivated audiences in the 1990s, and now, over three decades later, the phenomenon has transformed into a thriving market for trading cards. Recently, there has been a surge in thefts targeting shops that specialize in these collectible cards.

Hobbs, residing on Emerald Street in Adamsdown, Cardiff, confessed to charges including burglary, handling stolen goods, and possession of burglary tools. He received a 10-month prison sentence on 3 February at Newport Magistrates’ Court, along with a £250 compensation order.

Having opened just four months prior to the break-in on 2 February, Badham indicated that a variety of items were taken, including sealed products, graded cards, and individual packs, some of which can command prices in the hundreds or even thousands of pounds.

Impact of the Theft

According to Badham, many of the cards were carelessly tossed into bags, leading to damage that significantly decreased their value. He noted that some cards could potentially be restored in the United States, including a particularly valuable £4,000 Latias Gold Star card.

“Pokémon cards are now valued in the same way as fine art, luxury watches, jewelry and other high-end collectibles. They’re now deemed as investments,” Badham pointed out.

He emphasized the fragility of graded cards, which are thin pieces of plastic, indicating that their worth is primarily determined by their grade.

In a second break-in attempt shortly after reopening, the store was targeted again, but the perpetrator was quickly apprehended, and the stolen items were recovered. Badham commended the rapid response from police and security personnel at the M Cwmbran shopping center, where his shop is situated, saying, “They were there almost straight away.”

Future Concerns for the Business

A representative for the shopping center stated, “The center management team and all local stakeholders are committed to the highest levels of safety and vigilance across the town center.” Despite this, Badham expressed anxiety over the possibility of further break-ins and is considering implementing additional security measures for his inventory.

He remarked, “It’s unfortunate, but you have to protect yourself.”
