New Gaming and Educational Center Launches in Whitehaven

Gaming and education hub opens in town

In a significant development for Whitehaven, a state-of-the-art gaming and educational center has officially opened, representing a £4.6 million investment. Nestled within a Grade II-listed structure, the facility known as Levels is set to transform the local landscape.

Facility Features and Goals

Located in the historic Whittles building on Duke Street, the center features advanced e-sports setups for competitive gaming, a flight simulator, and versatile studio spaces. The primary aim is to enhance digital skills among the youth and encourage them to remain within the region.

Ian Irving, the managing director of Levels, emphasized the dual purpose of the hub: “It’s not merely about fun; it’s about fostering an engagement with technology and raising awareness of digital competencies and career opportunities.”

Community Impact and Accessibility

Michael Pemberton from British Energy Coast (BEC), which played a pivotal role in the center’s establishment, described the hub as an inclusive environment. He remarked, “If young individuals wish to come and play, they are more than welcome.”

He further elaborated on the facility’s mission, stating, “The essence of this hub is to equip young people with the essential skills for the future, ensuring they choose to stay in this area.” Schools are encouraged to utilize the center to enhance their curriculum through hands-on technological experiences.

Transformative Revitalization

Levels director Gemma Leadbetter expressed her enthusiasm about the renovation of a building that had been vacant for an extended period. She described the transformation as a significant boon for Whitehaven, stating, “The building has been deteriorating for about two decades, and revitalizing it has been a considerable challenge. However, we believe that the upgrades we’ve made are truly transformative for the town.”

She added, “This location is highly visible; there isn’t a vehicle passing through Whitehaven that doesn’t see it.” The new center not only revitalizes a historical space but also aims to inspire the community’s future.
