The alleged racial abuse directed at Vinicius Junior during Real Madrid’s Champions League clash with Benfica has sparked outrage, with Trent Alexander-Arnold labeling the event a “disgrace to football.” Meanwhile, José Mourinho, the Benfica manager, faced backlash for his response to the incident.

The match was interrupted for ten minutes after Vinicius reported that he was subjected to racial slurs by Gianluca Prestianni, prompting him and his teammates to momentarily leave the field.

Vinicius, who has faced numerous racist incidents throughout his career, took to Instagram to state, “Racists are, above all, cowards.” His comments highlighted the ongoing issue of racial abuse in football.

Mourinho suggested that Vinicius did not celebrate his remarkable goal in a “respectful manner” prior to the occurrence, which led to the controversy at the Estadio da Luz. The former coach of Real Madrid and Chelsea expressed, “It seems to happen at every stadium where Vinicius plays. Something always occurs.”

In response to Mourinho’s remarks, former Real Madrid star Clarence Seedorf criticized him during a broadcast, asserting that Mourinho made a significant error by attempting to justify the racial abuse. Seedorf emphasized that such behavior should never be excused.

Alexander-Arnold echoed similar sentiments, stating in a post-match interview that the events overshadowed an otherwise brilliant game. He remarked, “What transpired tonight is a disgrace to football and detracts from an incredible goal. Vinicius has endured this several times in his career, and it is unacceptable to ruin such a night for our team.”

Mourinho was observed conversing with Vinicius after the Brazilian decided to exit the pitch following his confrontation with Prestianni. In his post-match comments, Mourinho claimed to have received conflicting accounts from both players regarding the incident.

Despite reiterating his belief that Vinicius was disrespectful during his celebration, he defended Benfica’s reputation by referencing the club’s legendary player, Eusebio, to assert that Benfica is not a racist organization. When questioned if he thought Vinicius incited the crowd, Mourinho replied affirmatively.

He continued, “When you score a goal like that, you should celebrate and return to your position. I informed Vinicius that the greatest player in this club’s history was black, and this club is anything but racist.”

Following Mourinho’s comments, former England international Theo Walcott expressed his disapproval, stating that Mourinho’s presence in the media might have been ill-timed.

Kylian Mbappe, a teammate of Vinicius at Real Madrid, demanded that Prestianni be banned from Champions League play in light of the incident. He articulated, “Nothing like this has ever happened to me, and it’s vital to address such serious matters clearly. This player should not be allowed to compete in the Champions League any longer.”

With the second leg set for next Wednesday in Madrid, Walcott urged UEFA to take immediate action against such incidents, emphasizing the need for swift resolution.

Thierry Henry, reflecting on his own experiences with racial abuse, shared his empathy for Vinicius, stating, “I can relate to what he is experiencing. I’ve faced similar situations many times on the field. It often feels isolating, as it becomes your word against another’s.”

He added, “Vinicius’s actions of covering his mouth were telling, suggesting he wanted to conceal what was said. It remains to be seen how Prestianni will respond to this situation.”
