Manchester United’s Remarkable Transformation: What Has Changed?

Manchester United’s stunning win against Arsenal on Sunday stands as a testament to their recent resurgence, showcasing a level of performance that was truly impressive.

Similar to their triumph in the Manchester derby last weekend, this victory highlighted the return of key players stepping up when it mattered most. Analyzing the core of the United lineup at the Emirates, it was clear that they resembled the players fans have come to expect.

Harry Maguire delivered an exceptional defensive display, while Casemiro brought invaluable experience to the midfield. Bruno Fernandes excelled in his preferred number 10 role, and Bryan Mbeumo was not only a constant threat in front of goal but also demonstrated impressive hold-up play and speed.

Although United netted two outstanding goals, the success of their win was not solely dependent on individual brilliance. The cohesive effort from the entire squad played a pivotal role, and manager Michael Carrick deserves accolades for orchestrating this teamwork.

United’s Formation: A Perfect Fit for the Players

Observers will likely draw parallels between this performance and the one late in Ruben Amorim’s tenure, yet it felt as though we were witnessing a completely different squad on the pitch.

While Carrick’s motivational approach and effective communication undoubtedly contributed, the most significant factor was the players’ comfort with the tactical setup. As discussed on Match of the Day, the team’s body language was noticeably positive; they eagerly sought the ball and exhibited trust in one another.

It’s a straightforward notion, but often overlooked: placing players in a formation that complements their skills fosters success. United employed a 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 formation, with Fernandes positioned as a playmaker behind Mbeumo. Amad Diallo and Patrick Dorgu frequently tracked back, leveraging their experience as wing-backs to fulfill their defensive responsibilities.

This flexibility allowed United to occasionally form a back six when required. However, Diallo and Dorgu remained aware of their attacking roles when possession shifted back to their side. Each player understood their responsibilities, with Fernandes dropping to assist Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro in shielding the defense effectively.

Fundamentally, the organization of United’s shape and the clarity of their tasks resulted in a solid defensive effort, allowing them to counterattack rapidly and exploit their pace effectively.

Responding to Adversity: United’s Determination

To secure a victory at the Emirates, a team must excel in all aspects of the game—both offensively and defensively. A well-organized and disciplined defensive structure is paramount, enabling collective focus on neutralizing Arsenal’s attacking threats.

Simultaneously, readiness to capitalize on opportunities during offensive plays is crucial, whether through counters or sustained possession leading to goal-scoring chances. United demonstrated this approach right from the opening whistle, creating challenges for Arsenal by refusing to sit back defensively.

Their aggressive pressing was a bold strategy at the Emirates, yet it paid off as Arsenal struggled with nerves, leading to openings for United, which they nearly exploited. Initially, Arsenal appeared confident, controlling possession and territory, and when they took a 1-0 lead, it seemed like they would dominate the match.

However, rather than deflating United, that goal ignited their performance. They began playing with greater freedom and took calculated risks, aided by Arsenal’s mistakes, allowing United to level the score.

Following Mbeumo’s equalizer, United exuded confidence, going into halftime with the momentum of a tied game. Dorgu then scored a stunning goal early in the second half, giving United something to defend and allowing them to exploit counterattacks further.

At this juncture, Arsenal’s decision to make four substitutions simultaneously appeared to be a hasty reaction from Mikel Arteta. The home crowd clamored for fresh energy to change the game’s dynamics, but among those substituted were Martin Odegaard, who was in good form, and Gabriel Jesus, who had been effective. This sudden influx of new players disrupted Arsenal’s rhythm and flow.

A Defining Moment for Arsenal?

Even while leading 1-0, I noticed unusual mistakes from this Arsenal side. Their lack of composure was surprising, as they typically maintain control even when their attacking game falters.

This loss of control could be attributed to the mounting pressure they face in their title chase. Having experienced similar pressure during my time at Liverpool, I know how challenging it can be to maintain composure when the stakes are high.

During our title push in the 2001-02 season, the weight of each game intensified as we approached the finale, and ultimately we faltered and finished second, trailing Arsenal by seven points. Such scenarios can unfold for any team, especially at home, where expectations are heightened.

The defeat against United could mark a turning point in Arsenal’s season. It raises questions about whether the issues they faced will resurface in future matches or if this setback will serve as a wake-up call.

Despite earning only two points from their last three games, Arsenal remains four points clear atop the standings, a position they would have welcomed at the start of the season. They possess an impressive roster, characterized by strength and depth, along with more experience in high-pressure situations.

For these reasons, I am optimistic that they will respond positively. While United’s performance highlighted Arsenal’s vulnerabilities, it’s essential to note that this was merely their first home defeat this season.

This match marked their initial display of frailty, and it doesn’t necessarily indicate a trend for the remainder of the season. Questions will inevitably arise in the media regarding their mental resilience and whether they can withstand future challenges.

However, I believe they will rise to the occasion. They simply needed a wake-up call, and they certainly received one from United.
