Littler Triumphs Over Van Gerwen to Capture Saudi Masters Title

Luke Littler celebrates

In a stunning display of skill, Luke Littler clinched the inaugural Saudi Arabia Darts Masters, defeating Michael van Gerwen 8-5 in a gripping final match.

As Littler approaches his 19th birthday this Wednesday, he quickly established dominance by surging to a 4-0 advantage over his formidable opponent from the Netherlands.

Although Van Gerwen managed to narrow the gap to 4-3 and later to 5-4, he was unable to completely regain control of the match.

Littler showcased an impressive average of 104.84, significantly outperforming Van Gerwen’s checkout rate of 45.5% compared to Littler’s remarkable 61.5%.

“Last week in Bahrain didn’t go as planned, but I’m thrilled to come to Saudi Arabia for the first time and be the inaugural champion,” Littler shared with ITV4.

He acknowledged Van Gerwen’s resurgence, stating, “Michael found his rhythm, so I had to recalibrate my game, but I am just incredibly pleased to secure the victory. As players arriving here, we were uncertain of what to expect, yet the turnout has been fantastic.”

Van Gerwen, averaging 101.79 and hitting two 180s compared to Littler’s six, recognized that the quick start from the young player made the competition challenging.

“Falling behind 4-0 at the start was not ideal, but I always give my all,” the 36-year-old remarked. “Hats off to Littler; he performed exceptionally throughout the tournament. Sometimes, you just have to accept the outcome and move forward.”

Despite a $200,000 bonus on offer for a nine-dart finish, none of the participants achieved this feat during the competition.

The two-day event, featuring elite players from around the globe, marked a historic moment as it was the first darts tournament held in Saudi Arabia, a country known for its strict regulations against alcohol.

Part of the World Series of Darts, the event took place at the 1,000-seat Global Theater in Riyadh.

Nathan Aspinall, who fell to Littler in the semi-finals, previously noted that the audience at the tournament “wasn’t entirely there by choice.”

A representative from the PDC expressed satisfaction over the strong interest generated by the Saudi event, mentioning that Aspinall’s remarks were indicative of the unique nature of this inaugural darts occasion in the region.

The spokesperson clarified that all attendees were legitimate ticket holders or guests, suggesting that the atmosphere and crowd dynamics may differ from those at long-established darts events in the UK and Europe.

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has hosted numerous prominent sporting events, including Formula 1 races and golf tournaments, with plans to hold the men’s football World Cup in 2034.

However, the kingdom has faced scrutiny regarding its human rights practices and environmental policies.
