Introducing DockFrame: A Modular USB-C Hub for Enhanced Connectivity

The DockFrame is a USB-C hub compatible with Framework's modular, hot swappable kit so you always have just what you need

If you’re like many users, you may often find yourself wishing for additional input/output ports on your computer setup. With an array of charging cords, external drives, and a plethora of wireless adapters cluttering your workspace, the need for more connection options becomes evident.

Fortunately, the DockFrame has arrived on the scene, serving as a USB-C hub that allows for interchangeable ports. While not officially linked to any specific brand, this innovative device is engineered to be compatible with the hot-swappable hardware standard utilized by Framework’s expansion cards.

The DockFrame features a custom printed circuit board (PCB) that works seamlessly with any existing Framework USB-C modules you might have, as well as its own specialized ‘Tool Cards.’ These Tool Cards promise to deliver enhanced capabilities beyond the typical desktop I/O ports, including functions like voltage measurement and adjustable voltage output.

Prototyping and Future Plans

Though still in the early stages of development, the DockFrame is designed to function not just with Framework laptops, but also with other non-Framework devices and even smartphones. Recently, Eleo Basili, the Director of HW Media Lab LLC, unveiled photos of a prototype encased in an appealing purple housing.

While I appreciate Framework’s commitment to modularity and the aesthetic appeal of their translucent purple expansion cards, I have yet to justify a full investment in their ecosystem. Despite the positive reviews surrounding the Framework 16 laptop featuring an RTX 5070 upgrade, the price remains outside of my budget regardless of how it can be configured.

Community Input and Pricing Update

In a recent update, the team behind the DockFrame announced they are currently refining the PCB, focusing on aspects such as power distribution, routing, and port functionality. They are actively soliciting feedback from the community to ensure the product meets users’ needs.

As for pricing, no definitive figures have been released for the DockFrame itself, as the initiative remains in its prototyping and validation stages. However, the project has opened up pre-orders to gauge interest. Given that Framework’s expansion cards can start at just $11, there is hope that the DockFrame will provide an affordable entry point into this modular ecosystem.
