Howe Affirms Commitment to Newcastle Amid Challenges

Eddie Howe applauds Newcastle United supporters after the defeat against Brentford on 7 February, 2026

Newcastle United’s head coach, Eddie Howe, has stated he would resign if he felt he was no longer the right person to lead the team. His comments come in the wake of a disappointing 3-2 loss to Brentford at St James’ Park, which left the team facing criticism from their supporters.

Howe expressed his disappointment following the match, acknowledging that he is currently not meeting expectations as his team has fallen to 12th in the Premier League standings. However, just two days later, he expressed unwavering confidence in his abilities to guide the club, emphasizing, “There’s no doubt in my mind that I’m the right person for the role.”

“That’s the reason I’m here,” he explained ahead of the upcoming match against Tottenham Hotspur. “If I had any doubts, I wouldn’t be—because the club’s success is paramount. I have always prioritized the club over my own interests.”

Howe further stated that if he believed he could not advance the team effectively or fulfill the players’ needs, he would willingly step aside for someone more capable. Despite a lackluster record of just one win in their last eight matches across competitions, Howe continues to enjoy the support of the club’s management.

Since his arrival in 2021, Howe has made significant improvements, including leading Newcastle to a Carabao Cup victory over Liverpool and securing a place in the Champions League on two occasions. Looking ahead, Newcastle is poised to advance to the Champions League’s last 16 against Azerbaijani side Qarabag and faces Aston Villa in the FA Cup fourth round this Saturday.

Howe admitted he is currently navigating one of the most challenging phases of his tenure, yet he is leaning on his past experiences to initiate a turnaround. “I have faced numerous tough situations before, and those experiences provide me with valuable insight for this moment,” he remarked.

He highlighted the importance of collective spirit among the players, asserting that with unity and determination, they can achieve remarkable outcomes. “At the moment, the momentum is not in our favor. We need to shift it back, and within just a couple of games, the landscape can change dramatically,” Howe concluded.
