Emery’s Title Aspirations Diminish – Can Villa Revive Top-Five Ambitions?

Emery's title 'dream' over - but will Villa salvage top-five hopes?

Unai Emery departed the Molineux pitch in frustration after a disheartening evening for Aston Villa, as Rodrigo Gomes sealed a deserved 2-0 victory for Wolves. The defeat marked another setback for Villa, prompting their head coach to exit before the final whistle, leaving Wolves’ manager Rob Edwards puzzled by the absence of a customary post-match handshake.

With this latest loss, Villa has only managed three wins in their last ten Premier League matches, clinging to third place in the standings. The team now stands at a pivotal juncture in their campaign, with their aspirations for a Champions League return and the possibility of breaking a three-decade trophy drought by winning the Europa League hanging in the balance.

Next on Villa’s schedule are Chelsea and Manchester United, both positioned directly below them in the league. Should United triumph over Crystal Palace this Sunday, they will leapfrog Villa into third place. The opportunity to extend their lead to six points over United and nine over Chelsea was squandered against a team languishing at the bottom of the table with only one prior victory this season.

As Villa prepares for a Europa League clash against Lille in the round of 16, the momentum from what had been a promising season is at risk of unraveling. Emery, however, defended his players, asserting that despite their dwindling title hopes, they have exceeded expectations this season.

“We are losing the opportunity to win the title in the Premier League. Two months ago, we were competing with Arsenal and Manchester City,” he remarked. “While some might have held onto dreams of winning, we must acknowledge that our current position is about maintaining a top-five standing.”

Villa has benefited from the missteps of other teams, which has allowed them to retain a firm grasp on third place thus far. Chelsea, on the other hand, has dropped 17 points from winning positions at home and a total of 19 points throughout the season.

As Chelsea faces Arsenal on Sunday, they will be looking to capitalize on Villa’s recent downturn before heading to Villa Park for a match that could have significant implications for both clubs. Following the encounter with Lille on March 12, Villa will also prepare for an important trip to Old Trafford on March 15.

Individual performances have also declined, with Ollie Watkins managing to score only once in his last eleven outings, reminiscent of a prior stretch where he netted just one goal in the first 19 matches. Meanwhile, Morgan Rogers finds himself in a similar predicament.

This decline in form was exacerbated by injuries to key players like Boubacar Kamara, John McGinn, and Youri Tielemans last month, revealing Villa’s lack of squad depth. Tensions have also surfaced among players, as Ezri Konsa clashed with fans at the end of the match, with Amadou Onana urging Emi Buendia to exit the pitch more promptly during substitutions.

As the pressure mounts, even players are acknowledging the weight of expectations. “It does weigh on us, but it shouldn’t,” Rogers stated. “We have earned our place in this league, and we must not lose sight of that.”

Rogers continued, “Our recent performance hasn’t matched our usual standards, but that’s part of the Premier League challenge. We are determined to return to our winning ways. We know we have the talent to win every game, and while that may not always be feasible, we are playing attractive football, and there’s no need for concern.”

With the upcoming fixtures holding significant stakes, Rogers emphasized the necessity for the team to demonstrate their worthiness to remain in their current position.
