Dramatic Final-End Victory Keeps Team GB’s Semi-Final Aspirations Alive

Team GB's women curlers

The women’s curling team from Great Britain has managed to keep their hopes of advancing to the semi-finals of the Winter Olympics alive after a thrilling last-end victory against the United States.

In a gripping match, the Scottish team, currently facing an uphill battle, must win their remaining three games while relying on favorable outcomes in other matches to secure a spot in the medal rounds.

They cleared a significant initial challenge in a dramatic fashion in Cortina.

Entering the final end trailing 7-6 and without the hammer, the British team appeared destined for defeat after an inconsistent performance. However, Rebecca Morrison executed a remarkable double takeout with her last stone, placing immense pressure on the US team’s final throw, which they subsequently mishandled, granting Team GB an improbable 8-7 victory.

“There was a lot at stake but we just need to keep believing,” stated Morrison. “We were up against it but we’re here to fight and that’s what we did.”

Team GB now faces a crucial match against Japan, who are currently at the bottom of the standings, later today at 18:05 GMT, before they take on Italy, who are just above them, on Thursday at 13:05 GMT.

This relatively inexperienced rink has seen only Jen Dodds return from the 2022 gold medal-winning squad. They placed sixth in last year’s World Championships and struggled again against the Americans, missing several opportunities and making critical errors.

A steal in the third end suggested that the November European silver medalists could secure the necessary win, but the US regained control to lead at halftime. A double score in the sixth end momentarily put GB ahead, but conceding three points in the next end gave the Americans a seemingly insurmountable advantage until Morrison’s late heroics provided a glimmer of hope.

“Once it came out of Becca’s hand I knew it was close, and you could see the excitement it brought us,” said skip Sophie Jackson. “Our performance was inconsistent, but we’ll be ready to compete again tonight.”

Meanwhile, the British men’s curling team is also facing a precarious situation. The world champions need to secure a victory against the US today at 13:05 GMT and rely on Italy or Norway to lose both of their remaining matches to keep their medal hopes alive.
