Chinese DIY Enthusiasts Shift Focus to DDR3 Motherboards Amid Soaring Memory Costs

Seeing the absolute state of memory pricing, Chinese DIY community opts for DDR3 motherboards instead

This week, I delved into the soaring costs of DDR5-7200 memory, and it left me regretting my decision. The skyrocketing prices of memory components have led to a notable decline in sales, compelling some consumers to bypass not just the latest generation of hardware, but even resort to using significantly outdated CPUs to utilize older memory types.

Specifically, the pricing of DDR4 memory is not much more reasonable than its DDR5 counterpart. According to the latest data, the average market price for popular chips, specifically the DDR4 1Gx8 3200 MT/s, rose by 9.64%, escalating from $25.407 last week to $27.857 this week. A near 10% increase in just seven days is substantial.

As a result, many consumers are choosing to postpone their upgrades, leading to sluggish sales figures for both DDR5 and DDR4 memory. Consequently, DDR3 motherboards have gained traction, reportedly seeing sales increases of two to three times within the Chinese DIY sector. Additionally, motherboards bundled with 6th to 9th Generation Intel CPUs are garnering increased interest.

Supply dynamics significantly influence memory pricing. In the case of DDR5 memory, limited availability is partly driven by the AI sector’s substantial wafer purchases. Moreover, suppliers and traders holding stock are reluctant to release their limited inventories all at once. To complicate matters, several manufacturing facilities will be shutting down in observance of the upcoming Lunar New Year holidays.

While there were plans to phase out DDR4 memory in the near future, those intentions now appear to be on an indefinite hiatus as demand for this generation suddenly surges. DDR4 remains a viable option for those unable to access newer technology, proving to be only marginally inferior to DDR5 for gaming purposes.

So, what are your options if the latest hardware is out of reach? Naturally, the answer points to the aging DDR3. Although this technology is no longer cutting-edge, it still holds its ground in gaming scenarios.

Returning to those motherboard bundles, the minimum system requirements for games like Arc Raiders do include the Core i5 6600K CPU, one of the noted 6th Generation Intel processors. However, securing at least 12 GB of RAM is still necessary, and one might wonder about the frame rates achievable on a system that barely meets the minimum specifications. The results are likely to be underwhelming, and you should not expect any assistance with aim at those frame rates.

Nonetheless, if your gaming preferences lean more towards strategy or narrative-driven titles, and you wish to avoid the hassle of crafting your own DDR5 memory sticks, considering an upgrade to older hardware might not be a bad idea. However, if you manage to find DDR4 at a reasonable price, it may indeed prove to be a superior choice.
