Carrick Embraces ‘Sir Alex’ Strategy Amid Positive Start at Manchester United

Manchester United’s recent journey has taken an unexpected turn following their exits from domestic cup competitions and a season with fewer matches than any since 1914-15. As a result, the remainder of the season is now divided into distinct segments, with the team facing a lengthy break before their next game against Everton in 12 days.

For Michael Carrick, who took the managerial reins on January 13, this interval presents a valuable opportunity for his squad to rejuvenate. It allows players time to recover from minor injuries and fatigue while also serving as a moment for introspection.

Although Carrick refrained from suggesting that Benjamin Sesko’s equalizer in injury time transformed their 1-1 draw against West Ham into a continuation of their four-match winning streak, he recognized that the overall performance in recent weeks warranted a positive evaluation.

“In the grand scheme of things, we take the point, dust ourselves down a little bit and assess it,” Carrick noted.

He added, “Considering the last five games, having just one draw is a significant positive.”

Unexpectedly, Carrick’s victories against title contenders Manchester City and Arsenal showcased his tactical acumen. Wins against Fulham and Tottenham, while anticipated, came with their own set of challenges that required resolution.

Thanks to the missteps of rivals Chelsea and Liverpool, United currently sits in fourth place, possessing a comfortable yet not insurmountable margin in their pursuit of a Champions League spot—something few predicted after Ruben Amorim’s departure following the draw against Leeds on January 4.

“We know how difficult it is to maintain momentum in this league,” Carrick remarked, noting his team’s unbeaten streak of nine league matches, which has spanned three different managers, including interim Darren Fletcher.

He explained, “Sometimes things come together, and everything clicks. You look incredibly dangerous and there’s a spark. Other times, it feels a bit sluggish.”

A pressing question now surrounds Carrick: Can his squad produce winning performances against teams they are favored to defeat? Many viewed West Ham as such a team, despite Nuno Espirito Santo’s side striving for their fourth win in five league outings.

While Carrick did not achieve victory, he made bold decisions to salvage what seemed like a lost match. In contrast to Amorim’s approach during a December draw with West Ham at Old Trafford, where offensive substitutions were minimal, Carrick opted for a more aggressive strategy.

He substituted Sesko for the underperforming Matheus Cunha and made a notable change by bringing on Zirkzee for defender Diogo Dalot with eight minutes remaining. This maneuver shifted the team to a three-man defense while pushing more players forward.

Carrick was aware that this strategy could lead to conceding another goal, but it paid off due to critical defensive interventions from substitute Leny Yoro and a vital save from Senne Lammens.

As the match approached the end of the seven minutes of added time, Carrick’s side still had an opportunity to score, and Sesko’s remarkable finish ensured they left with something to show for their efforts.

“It’s always worth it to try and salvage something from the game,” Carrick stated regarding his tactical changes.

He emphasized, “We all aspire to deliver the perfect performance, striving for excellence. Sometimes, things don’t pan out as planned, but that doesn’t mean we should give up. We pushed forward with three at the back, focusing on attack to find that crucial goal. That’s our approach.”

This mindset echoes the philosophy of Sir Alex Ferguson, who frequently embraced risks in pursuit of favorable outcomes, leading to many late-game triumphs during his illustrious career. Examples include late winners against Arsenal and Fulham, as well as a crucial equalizer against West Ham.

Carrick is satisfied with securing 13 points from a possible 15 in his first batch of matches. As he prepares for the upcoming trio of fixtures, he will surely take pride in the team’s resilient spirit and unwavering determination that contributed to their success.
