Anticipation Builds as LABS Works Prepares to Release Their New Game Next Month

The studio behind the best metroidvania of 2021 has a new game coming out next month—and I'm dropping everything to play it

On the surface, Lovish might appear to be a conventional 8-bit platformer, yet it has the potential to captivate fans just like Astalon: Tears of the Earth did. This title stands out among contemporary metroidvanias due to its engaging class-based combat and exploration mechanics. The depth and variety of its hidden secrets are remarkable, making it a visual delight for pixel art fans.

If you’re a metroidvania enthusiast, I strongly encourage you to give this game a try. The year 2021 was monumental for this genre, showcasing titles like Axiom Verge 2 and Ender Lilies, but Astalon truly eclipsed them all.

The talented developers at LABS Works, who created that hidden gem, have been diligently crafting Lovish since its intended launch last year. This time, however, they have shifted gears from the metroidvania style to a single-screen platformer, blending straightforward Astalon-esque combat with intriguing puzzles.

After experiencing the demo last year, I was thoroughly impressed by how satisfying the gameplay felt. Although the challenges primarily focus on the classic formula of collecting keys and reaching exits, the full game promises a staggering 50 levels, leaving plenty of room for creativity and surprises.

Each completed level will feature a randomized event scene that draws from a vast pool of hundreds of possible outcomes. Players can expect varied interactions with a diverse array of characters, as well as opportunities for loot and intense boss encounters.

LABS Works continues their collaboration with Matt Kap, the artist responsible for the captivating pixel art and soundtrack. Kap’s previous work on the cult classic Castle in the Darkness showcased his talent, especially with the highly anticipated sequel in development. While his pixel art style may not be as intricate as Blasphemous, its distinctive chunky and high-contrast aesthetic is easily recognizable to those who have played his games, including 1001 Spikes.

As a fan eagerly awaiting this release, the wait is almost over; Lovish is set to debut on Steam on February 5. A free demo is currently available, and I highly recommend giving it a try to experience the excitement for yourself.
