Ahmed Tempered in Semi-Final Aspirations – Can He Find His Place in England’s Line-Up?

Ahmed plays down hope of semi-final place - can he fit in England XI?

Rehan Ahmed, the all-rounder for England, has chosen to downplay his chances of being selected for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup, despite playing a pivotal role in the thrilling victory over New Zealand on Friday.

Making his debut in the World Cup at just 21 years old, Ahmed made an immediate impact by taking a wicket with his very first delivery and contributing a vital 19 runs without losing his wicket, helping secure the win alongside Will Jacks.

He was included in the squad primarily due to his spin bowling, which was well-suited for the turning conditions in Colombo. However, with the semi-final set to take place on a more balanced pitch in Mumbai this Thursday, his position seems uncertain.

“I’m not too bothered about my place in the team,” said Ahmed, who made history as England’s youngest men’s Test cricketer in 2022.

He continued, “Baz [coach Brendon McCullum] and Brooky [captain Harry Brook] will definitely field the best team they believe will secure a win, just as they did against New Zealand. It’s not a personal matter for me; this is a World Cup, and it’s my first experience in one. I’ll just keep enjoying the journey, and if I get the opportunity to play, I will, but if not, I will support the team from the sidelines.”

Ahmed played a crucial role in reviving England’s chase against New Zealand, hitting a six off his second ball. He also executed a reverse sweep for four runs against Mitchell Santner and smashed another six over long-off, ensuring that England triumphed with three balls to spare, advancing through the Super 8s stage unbeaten.

This performance has sparked discussions among fans about whether Ahmed should retain his spot for Thursday’s match against either co-hosts India or the West Indies. However, integrating the young player into England’s existing lineup poses challenges.

Pitchmap comparing the control offered by Adil Rashid compared to Rehan Ahmed. It shows that Rashid had much better control against New Zealand then Ahmed.

The return of pace bowlers and spinners has been more balanced at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, contrasting with Colombo, where spin bowling had the upper hand. Without the return of fast bowler Jamie Overton, England might find themselves vulnerable, relying solely on Jofra Archer and Sam Curran as their pace options.

Ahmed’s batting against the Black Caps raises questions about his potential position in the batting order. Although he could be considered for a spot in the top seven, achieving that is not straightforward. A swap with struggling opener Jos Buttler might appear logical; however, Ahmed has only opened once in his T20 career, back in 2023 for Leicestershire against Northamptonshire.

He has typically batted at number three, currently occupied by captain Harry Brook, and most of his experience has been at positions seven or eight in the batting order. Moving Tom Banton or Jacob Bethell to the top and placing Ahmed in the middle order would be a significant risk with little supporting evidence.

While Ahmed’s bowling performance saw him take 2-28, including key wickets of Rachin Ravindra and Cole McConchie, a deeper analysis indicates that he was less accurate compared to fellow leg-spinner Adil Rashid.

Data reveals that nine of Rashid’s deliveries were either missed or edged, whereas Ahmed had only two such instances. Additionally, Rashid displayed a notably superior control of length, making it less likely for England to opt for Ahmed over Liam Dawson, who has consistently provided stability for Brook.

Ahmed, who debuted in Test cricket at 18 and has been a consistent member of England’s white-ball teams, has had limited opportunities due to Rashid’s prominence as the primary leg-spinner. Despite participating in only 13 of England’s 53 T20 matches since his debut, this outing was his most impressive performance to date.

“I just want to make a mark whenever I am given the chance,” Ahmed expressed. “I understand that the current team balance is excellent, which is why we are performing well. I’m very adaptable. I felt incredibly pleased to have the opportunity to contribute to a win for England, not for my own sake, but for the team’s success.”
