A Major Revamp for Third-Person Movement Animations in Fallout: New Vegas

Finally, a comprehensive overhaul for third-person movement animations in Fallout: New Vegas

The modern Fallout series often gets labeled as “first-person RPGs,” and this categorization can be disheartening. A considerable part of their charm, similar to The Elder Scrolls, lies in the ability to effortlessly switch between first and third-person perspectives at the touch of a button. When I find myself in a tight corridor filled with ghouls, armed with an air-cooled automatic rifle and a dwindling supply of .308 ammunition, first-person view feels essential. Conversely, when I’m traversing the open landscape in a duster or swinging a golf club at approaching Fiends, third-person view is the way to go.

Traditionally, modders have concentrated on enhancing first-person animations, likely due to its greater popularity and the relative ease of adjustments. This focus explains why it has taken until now for modder Wombat to introduce a complete overhaul of third-person animations for Fallout: New Vegas. Notably, this update also addresses NPC animations.

Enhanced Animations – 3rd Person Movement

This new mod is reportedly the inaugural entry in a series of planned Enhanced Animation mods. Wombat elaborates, “It encompasses all basic movement animations while standing, which include idle, walking, running, jumping, and landing animations, all featuring directional variations. Additionally, there are some supplementary animations for melee weapon and minigun attacks, providing a glimpse of what’s anticipated in the future.”

Moreover, the mod rectifies several animation bugs that were overlooked in the previous 3rd Person Animation Fixpack, which primarily addressed issues like unrealistic finger bends, stuttering at the conclusion of animation loops, and the peculiar sliding of characters when they stop moving while rotating the camera in third-person.

While some enhancements in the Enhanced Animations mod are quite specific—such as the adjustment that alleviates the strain of leaning back while wielding a minigun—the improvements in melee and jumping animations during movement should stand out significantly.

To install this mod, users must first acquire the kNVSE Animation Plugin and the JIP LN NVSE Plugin, both of which are likely already installed as they are standard requirements for various mods. After securing these plugins, you can proceed to add Enhanced Animations – 3rd Person Movement, allowing you to joyfully minigun airborne cazodors to your heart’s content.
