A Disturbing Trend: Programs That Intentionally Crash Your Computer

There are a surprising number of programs designed to randomly kill processes on your computer until it crashes—or you wimp out

Strangely enough, a variety of programs exist that are designed to randomly terminate processes on a computer, leading it to crash. The reasons behind this peculiar trend remain unclear to many.

This morning, I stumbled upon a program developed by a user named IceSolst on the platform X, utilizing the AI coding tool Cursor AI. This application randomly picks a process on your machine using its process ID (PID) and ends it. If you’re questioning the rationale behind this, you might be overanalyzing the situation.

From further interactions on social media, it seems this app includes a marketplace feature that allows users to purchase malware using $hitcoins earned from spinning a digital roulette wheel.

I wrote Task Unmanager: keeps killing processes Russian Roulette style, until your machine crashes

As absurd as it may sound, one could argue that this is the entire objective. While I advise against installing malware on your system, it’s worth noting that this particular application isn’t actually available for download.

Nonetheless, I did discover several repositories on Github that host applications with similar functionalities, although they appear to lack malware. The saying goes that nothing is truly original on the internet, yet the concept of an application designed to deliberately crash your PC has surprisingly gained traction.

One such application, known as process roulette, was uploaded to Github about five years ago by a developer named Codebox. Users can select the number of rounds they wish to play while hoping to avoid a system crash.

Process Roulette: A Risky Game

The game is characterized as: “A silly little game that could mess up your machine pretty badly (please use a VM!).” Players can only abort the game early by typing the phrase: “I am a coward.” This adds an element of challenge to the experience.

Additionally, I found another program created a decade ago, inspired by a tweet from user Jamis. The realization that 2016 was ten years ago hit me hard. This application, also named process roulette, invites players to join together on a virtual machine to participate. It offers a more structured gameplay experience, complete with a designated ‘croupier’ serving as the referee and a ‘controller’ managing the game.

Unlike others, this version allows players to engage without necessarily endangering their own computers.

Exploring Further into the Madness

A quick search on Github unveils even more masochistic programs designed for users who seek such experiences. However, it’s essential to highlight that unless you intentionally install malware, simply restarting your computer after a crash typically resolves the issue.

In light of these unusual applications, I spoke with an anonymous individual who recounted a story from a former workplace. A colleague had developed a similar program and utilized it on unsuspecting coworkers, an act that could be likened to a minor localized cyber assault. Therefore, if you’re the type who enjoys indulging in questionable office snacks, it might be wise to secure your computer with a password.
