Chelsea Set to Face PSG, Man City Draws Real Madrid in Champions League Round of 16

Chelsea v PSG, Man City v Real & Newcastle v Barca in Champions League last 16

In an exhilarating matchup, Chelsea will take on reigning champions Paris St-Germain in the knockout stage of the Champions League. Meanwhile, Manchester City is poised to battle Real Madrid for the fifth consecutive year in this prestigious tournament.

Despite six clubs from the Premier League making it to the last 16, no all-English matchups have emerged. Arsenal, who topped the group stage, will square off against Bayer Leverkusen.

Additionally, Newcastle United will encounter Barcelona, Liverpool is set to face Galatasaray, and Tottenham will go head-to-head with Atletico Madrid. The initial legs of these fixtures are scheduled for March 10 and 11, with the return legs slated for March 17 and 18.

Newcastle will host Barcelona for their first leg, while the other Premier League teams will play their second legs at home, having qualified directly for this stage. Chelsea’s clash with PSG is particularly noteworthy, as it revisits last year’s FIFA Club World Cup final, where Chelsea triumphed over the European champions with a decisive 3-0 victory in New Jersey.

David Barnard, Chelsea’s director of football, remarked, “It will be a challenging match, but we are undeterred. The focus must remain on one game at a time. We have a formidable opponent to start with.”

In the current season’s league phase, Manchester City, Newcastle, and Liverpool previously faced their respective opponents. City’s triumph in Madrid last December marked their ninth encounter with Real since April 2022. City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, stated, “This is a significant match for both sides. It feels like a final, and we are excited to return there.”

Former Liverpool player and ambassador Ian Rush noted, “Having the second leg at our home ground is advantageous. The atmosphere at Anfield is unparalleled, and I believe it will play a crucial role in the outcome.”

The path to the final has already been outlined, and should both Newcastle and Tottenham advance, they would face each other in the quarter-finals, while Chelsea and Liverpool would meet in the opposite half of the draw.

The championship match is set to take place at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary, on Saturday, May 30. Arsenal topped the league phase as the only team to secure victories in all eight of their matches, finishing ahead of Bayern Munich by three points.

If Arsenal overcomes Leverkusen, they will meet either Sporting or Bodo/Glimt in the quarter-finals. According to statistical analysis, Mikel Arteta’s squad is seen as the front-runner for this season’s title, with a 27.40% likelihood of claiming their first European championship, followed by Bayern at 14.28%.

Liverpool stands as the third favorite with a 12.83% chance, while Manchester City follows closely at 10.79%. In comparison, Chelsea is rated at 6.86%, which is higher than PSG’s odds of 4.64%.

Barnard further emphasized, “While it’s tempting to look at the draw, it’s crucial not to underestimate any opponent.” Tottenham, having qualified through last season’s Europa League victory, could potentially face their North London rivals, Arsenal, in the semi-finals, but they are currently regarded as long shots to win it all at just 1.22%.

Former Tottenham defender Gary Mabbutt shared his perspective: “At this stage, surprises can happen, and every match is winnable. I remember last year, we were drawn for the Europa League and went all the way to the final, emerging as champions. Anything is possible.”

PSG’s coach, Luis Enrique, expressed anticipation for the match against Chelsea, stating, “Competing against one of the premier English teams, whom we are quite familiar with, will be thrilling. However, this isn’t about seeking revenge; these are two distinct tournaments.”

As for Barcelona, they will now prepare to face Newcastle. Coach Hansi Flick remarked, “We aren’t celebrating our avoidance of PSG. We must respect our challengers, as every team aspires to reach the final, and Newcastle will be equally determined to secure the Champions League title.”

Leverkusen’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, referred to Arsenal as “potentially the top contender for both the Champions League and the Premier League titles.” He added, “For us to succeed, everything must align perfectly, but we are capable of presenting them with a formidable challenge.”
