Slot Labels Current Season as His Most Challenging Yet

Liverpool manager Arne Slot looks glum on the touchline

Arne Slot, the manager of Liverpool, has declared that this season stands out as the most difficult he has faced in his managerial career, stating it is “by a mile.” He expressed concern that his team is falling short of the club’s high standards.

The recent defeat to Manchester City has left the reigning Premier League champions positioned sixth in the standings, trailing Chelsea, who occupy fifth place, by four points. Liverpool finds itself in a tie with Brentford for points, and a late disallowed goal from Rayan Cherki could have seen them drop below the Bees based on goal difference.

Taking the reins from Jurgen Klopp in June 2024, Slot guided Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th top-flight title during his debut season. However, this season has proven to be a struggle, despite the club’s significant investment of nearly £450 million in new talent over the summer, which includes a British record signing of £125 million for Alexander Isak.

As of the 2025-26 season, Liverpool has recorded 11 wins, six draws, and eight losses in the league. In response to a question regarding the difficulties of the current season, Slot remarked, “By a mile. All the other seasons I have managed, there were only positives. I don’t think I have ever lost two games back-to-back until now; it’s an exception for me, and I am not accustomed to it.”

Slot noted that the players are acutely aware of the expectations that come with wearing the Liverpool jersey. He emphasized that the team is not meeting those expectations and that this realization contributes to their collective disappointment.

It appears that five clubs from the Premier League may qualify for next season’s Champions League, a shift from the usual four. Last month, Slot indicated that Liverpool could consider their season acceptable if they managed to improve in one area but could achieve something exceptional with enhancements in both offensive and defensive phases.

However, on Tuesday, the Dutch manager suggested that his squad would need to strive for near perfection to secure a spot in the Champions League for the next term. He acknowledged the serious repercussions that would arise from missing out on European competition, stating, “If we don’t qualify for the Champions League next season, it’s definitely not been an acceptable season.”

Upon his arrival, Slot had only brought Federico Chiesa into the fold after a season spent in the Europa League, recognizing the significant impact such circumstances have on the club’s operations.

As Liverpool prepares to face Sunderland on Wednesday, who remain unbeaten at home, they will do so at 20:15 GMT. Slot may encounter challenges in fielding a robust right-back lineup, as Dominik Szoboszlai, who has been serving in that role, is suspended following a late red card against Manchester City. Additionally, Conor Bradley is sidelined for the remainder of the season, Jeremie Frimpong has not played since sustaining a groin injury, and Joe Gomez is dealing with his own injury concerns. Moreover, key players like Isak and center-back Giovanni Leoni are also out due to long-term injuries.

Slot remarked, “It’s different to lead the team after experiencing a defeat or a series of draws compared to after a victory, but I believe no one in this facility thinks I have completely altered my approach. There remains a chance for us to achieve something remarkable this season.”
