Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics Kick Off with Spectacular Ceremony

The Olympic rings come together as a fireworks display during the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Milan-Cortina

The Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games have officially commenced, marked by a dazzling opening ceremony that unfolded across four distinct venues.

San Siro Stadium in Milan served as the centerpiece for the event, while additional segments occurred in Cortina, Livigno, and Predazzo. Despite initial worries about coordinating a ceremony in multiple locations, the event was a remarkable success, executed flawlessly.

Two Olympic cauldrons were ignited—one in Milan and the other in Cortina—while Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli captivated the audience with a powerful performance of Nessun Dorma as the Olympic torch made its way into San Siro.

The ceremony concluded with an exhilarating display during the athletes’ parade, where the Italian delegation received an enthusiastic welcome across all four sites.

In Milan, figure skater Lilah Fear proudly carried the flag for Great Britain, while in Cortina, bobsledder Brad Hall had the honor of leading his team. The Ukrainian athletes received one of the warmest receptions, while Team USA also garnered loud applause.

However, a wave of discontent emerged when US Vice President JD Vance appeared on the big screen, with noticeable boos from the crowd, and similar negative reactions were directed at the teams from Israel and Georgia.

Creative director Marco Balich’s vision for the ceremony revolved around the theme of ‘armonia’, symbolizing unity and connection among diverse territories and cultures, all woven into a shared narrative.

Segments titled ‘Italian beauty’ and ‘fantasia’ were showcased, including a heartfelt tribute to the late fashion designer Giorgio Armani, who passed away in 2025 at the age of 91.

American pop icon Mariah Carey, one of the top-selling female artists globally, dazzled the audience in a sparkling white ensemble as she performed a rendition of the classic song Volare.

“We stand prepared to create Olympic history once more, driven by the values that unite us all: excellence, friendship, and respect,” stated Giovanni Malago, president of the organizing committee for Milan-Cortina 2026.

He added, “The collaboration among various entities striving toward a singular dream demonstrates this nation’s remarkable capability to manage such a multifaceted project. I have never felt prouder to be Italian than I do tonight.”

International Olympic Committee President Kirsty Coventry officially declared the Games open, marking a historic moment as she became the first woman to perform this role.

“This is why we cherish the Games. Through your achievements, we see the best version of ourselves,” she expressed to the athletes.

Coventry continued, “You remind us of our courage, kindness, and resilience, encouraging us to rise again, no matter how many times we fall. The Olympic spirit encompasses much more than just sports; it embodies our humanity and what unites us.”

She concluded, “This is the enchantment of the Olympic Games: inspiring us all to reach our fullest potential, together.”

Although events such as curling, figure skating, and ice hockey have already commenced, the first five gold medals of the Games will be contested on Saturday.
