England Clinches T20 Series Against Sri Lanka in Nail-Biting Finish

Jacob Bethell with hands held out wide during Sri Lanka's innings

In a gripping finale, England triumphed over Sri Lanka by 12 runs in the third T20 international held in Pallekele, managing to defend a modest target of 129. This victory not only secured a clean sweep of 3-0 in the T20 series but also provided a significant boost ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

Sam Curran delivered a remarkable performance, scoring a career-high 58 runs amidst a top-order collapse, leading England to a total of 128-9. The English bowlers, particularly the spinners, secured nine wickets to achieve an unexpected win, with Will Jacks claiming 3-14 and Jacob Bethell taking 4-11, including three wickets in a single over, as Sri Lanka was all out for 116.

Choosing to bat first, England faced an immediate setback as opener Ben Duckett fell for a golden duck, dismissed lbw. The team struggled initially, with both Jacob Bethell and Tom Banton dismissed for low scores, leaving them at a precarious 34-4 by the end of the powerplay.

Despite the early struggles, Curran steadied the innings, forming a partnership of 47 with Liam Dawson (14) before both fell to the Sri Lankan seamers. Dushmantha Chameera excelled for the hosts, achieving figures of 5-24, including the key wicket of Curran.

Spinners Shine in Pallekele

On a pitch favorable to spin, Sri Lanka, already defeated in the first two matches, bowled exceptionally well. Chameera’s performance was pivotal, claiming five wickets and demonstrating skill that kept the match competitive.

Initially, England’s bowlers, Luke Wood and Liam Dawson, took crucial early wickets, but Sri Lanka’s Kusal Mendis and Pavan Rathnayake threatened to take control. However, Jacks turned the tide by dismissing both batters and followed up with two more wickets, significantly shifting the momentum.

Bethell, stepping up as a part-time spinner, dismantled the Sri Lankan lower order, taking three wickets in the 18th over. He finished the match by claiming Maheesh Theekshana, solidifying England’s record for the lowest total ever defended in T20 history against Sri Lanka.

Looking Ahead to the World Cup

England’s upcoming World Cup campaign kicks off against Nepal on February 8 at 09:30 GMT. They will carry the momentum from this series as they prepare for the tournament co-hosted in India and Sri Lanka.

After securing victories in the preceding one-day series and the first two T20 matches, England faced an opportunity to solidify their preparation for the World Cup. Their performance in Pallekele showcased the effectiveness of their spinners, an encouraging sign as they head into the tournament.

Voices from the Field

England captain Harry Brook expressed his excitement, stating, “That was awesome! One of the most thrilling wins I’ve experienced. We’ve demonstrated our ability to adapt, and Sam Curran’s performance was outstanding.”

Sam Curran, who was named player of the match, reflected on the game, saying, “Playing on the same wicket three times, we believed 130 was a competitive score. Our spinners were crucial today, and it was a fantastic series win.”

Sri Lanka’s captain Dasun Shanaka admitted disappointment, saying, “We had the opportunity to push deeper into the game. There are several areas we need to improve for the World Cup, and as captain, I must address these issues.”
