Is Carrick Demonstrating That Amorim’s Tenure Was a Missed Opportunity for Manchester United?

Manchester United have won all three games since Michael Carrick was named head coach to the end of the season

Experiencing a moment of pure joy.

Since Ruben Amorim was dismissed, discussions have surged regarding a potential reconnection with the essence of Manchester United.

Many individuals, however, question if such a connection truly exists.

If it does, then United’s recent last-minute victory exemplifies it perfectly. Securing a win deep into injury time, just when it seemed victory was slipping away, encapsulated the sentiments of many, as noted in Michael Carrick’s reflections following the match.

Benjamin Sesko certainly deserves the spotlight after delivering the thrilling conclusion.

However, as time passes, supporters of United may begin to reflect on Amorim’s troubled 14-month reign and contemplate whether their club effectively squandered a year of potential.

Amorim witnessed victories that resembled this dramatic finish.

Recall the thrilling 5-4 clash against Lyon in the Europa League last April, a match that was even more intense with two goals scored in the final minute of extra time.

Looking back, Carrick was part of such moments himself. He was an injury-time substitute when Michael Owen netted his iconic winner in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford in 2009.

The exhilarating feeling remains unchanged.

“It’s the best feeling,” Carrick expressed.

“I’ve had the fortune of being part of some incredible moments here, experiencing that rush of joy and excitement.

There’s truly no better venue than in front of the Stretford End, where it holds even more significance.

Fans leave with more than just a victory; it adds layers of connection and emotion, which is why this club is so cherished.

That thrill is embedded in our club’s identity. Although we’d prefer to secure victories more comfortably, when they do come, it’s undeniably special.”

Reconstructing Following Amorim’s Troubled Tenure

Let’s clarify a few key points.

Manchester United has now achieved three consecutive wins in the Premier League, marking Carrick’s third match in charge during his second stint.

In contrast, Amorim took 36 matches to reach a similar milestone, achieving consecutive victories only once during his entire time at Old Trafford.

After victories by Chelsea and Liverpool the previous day, United has climbed back to fourth in the standings, a position Amorim never attained at the end of any matchday.

Including his initial period in 2021, Carrick has now secured four wins out of five league matches he has overseen.

He joins the ranks of Sir Matt Busby in 1946 and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2019 as the only United managers to achieve such a feat.

Amorim, however, required 12 league matches to accumulate four victories, winning just one out of the subsequent ten. His average of 1.23 points per game in the Premier League stands as the lowest for any United manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013.

Then there’s the tactical approach—and player selection.

While United still grapple with defensive weaknesses, the transition from a three-man defense to a four-man setup has not exacerbated the situation.

This critical tactical adjustment from Amorim’s era has opened doors for Kobbie Mainoo’s resurgence. Under Amorim, Mainoo had yet to start a single league match this season, as he faced stiff competition from skipper Bruno Fernandes for a starting role.

Mainoo excelled during the match against Fulham. Defensively, often viewed as a shortcoming, he was reliable, and his passing and spatial awareness proved essential as Carrick’s team sought to break through the opposition.

“Kobbie’s performance was outstanding today in numerous aspects,” Carrick remarked.

“There was significant work for both Kobbie and Casemiro to accomplish in the midfield, particularly without the ball, and I thought he was exceptional in that regard.

When in possession, he remains unfazed.

He grasps what is required and consistently delivers quality moments.

We expect that from him, yet it’s easy to forget how young he is.

He has so much more to offer, but seeing him today, playing with such confidence and belief, is truly a delight.”

Upcoming Challenge Against Tottenham

Next on the agenda for United is a home match against Tottenham, a rematch of last season’s Europa League final.

In that encounter held in Bilbao, Amorim failed to devise a strategy to overcome a Tottenham team that struggled throughout last season and has shown little improvement domestically this season.

Nonetheless, the visitors will be buoyed by their recent comeback against Manchester City, managing to draw after trailing by two goals, which alleviates some pressure on Thomas Frank, who took over after Ange Postecoglou had previously defeated United in Bilbao.

The loss in that crucial match, which offered a pathway to this season’s Champions League, dealt a significant blow to United’s prestige and finances. Amorim could have faced the axe then.

Instead, the club chose to retain him. However, after the 1-1 draw with Leeds at the start of last month, United’s decision-makers were unwilling to risk missing out on European competition for a second consecutive season.

In just three matches, Carrick has propelled the club into a Champions League qualifying position while establishing a five-point cushion over seventh-placed Brentford, understanding that finishing sixth could secure a Europa League spot, which has been United’s declared goal for the season.

Discussions will persist regarding whether Carrick should be appointed on a permanent basis.

However, there is little debate about whether Amorim should have been let go, raising questions about whether he should have been appointed in the first place.

As one well-informed critic noted months ago, “aside from his press conferences, what exactly is he proficient at?”
