Root Defends Brook’s WWE-Inspired Celebration

Harry Brook mimics Steve 'Stone Cold' Austin by removing his gloves and punching them together

Joe Root expressed his hope that Harry Brook’s celebration, reminiscent of a WWE icon, will be interpreted positively. The England captain commemorated his match-winning century against Sri Lanka by channeling the spirit of a well-known wrestler.

Recently, Brook found himself embroiled in controversy due to a late-night drinking incident, which involved a confrontation with a bouncer just before he was set to captain a match in New Zealand. This episode nearly cost him his captaincy, yet he received only a stern warning and a hefty fine of £30,000 for his actions off the field.

Upon securing a remarkable century in Colombo, which was part of a series-winning performance achieved in just 57 balls, Brook celebrated by removing his batting gloves, clapping them together, and mimicking the gesture of drinking. This iconic move was first popularized by the former WWE star ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, who would famously smash two beers together before downing them.

Following the match, Brook acknowledged that his celebration was a homage to Austin and also a way to rebuild rapport with his teammates. “It was really about enjoying the moment with the team,” Brook noted. “As I mentioned in my recent press conference, I need to regain the trust of the lads, and I aimed to do this by performing well and leading by example.”

Root, who was at the crease with Brook during the celebration, voiced his desire for the gesture to be taken in the light-hearted spirit it was intended. He remarked, “I believe this is his method of seeking approval from his peers through humor. This is a key aspect of why he has the potential to be an outstanding leader—he possesses that humorous side as well.”

He continued, emphasizing Brook’s poise and clarity during critical moments, while also showcasing his ability to incorporate humor. Root stated, “I hope people understand the intention behind his actions, as there is no negativity involved—it’s all about having a bit of fun with his teammates.”

This isn’t the first occasion an England athlete has linked a celebration to a drinking-related disciplinary matter; Paul Gascoigne’s memorable ‘dentist’s chair’ celebration after scoring against Scotland in Euro 1996 is another notable example.

Root praised Brook’s performance throughout the series, noting his development as a player. “He has demonstrated remarkable growth over these three matches, and he remained composed even when the opposition started strongly. It’s crucial to maintain calmness when facing challenges, and he managed that excellently tonight, further proving why he is destined to be a great captain in white-ball cricket. He has certainly made significant strides in earning back the trust of the team, especially in the dressing room.”
