Surprise Release: Another Armored Core Game Debuts on Steam, But Patience is Key

Finally, another Armored Core instalment just surprise dropped on Steam, but you'll need to have the patience of a saint to play it

Since its inception in 1997, the Armored Core franchise has seen the launch of an impressive 16 main titles, with 2023’s standoutArmored Core 6: Fires of Rubiconbeing the sole entry available on PC—until now. In an unexpected twist, Japanese publisher G-Mode has just introduced another installment to Steam, priced affordably at $11.

However,Armored Core: Mobile 3may not resonate widely with gamers. Originally developed for flip phones in 2007, this game was initially exclusive to Japan. Although it’s now accessible on Steam, many players may struggle to engage with it due to the absence of English subtitles. While it does support controllers, the lack of modernization makes it a challenging experience for most.

The game’s storyline unfolds betweenArmored Core NexusandArmored Core Last Raven, both of which are spinoffs fromArmored Core 3. These titles were released on PlayStation 2 in 2004 and 2005, respectively, a period that saw the platform host an impressive total of seven Armored Core games.

Players can expect gameplay similar to the core series, where they customize their mech to tackle a variety of missions set in diverse environments, ranging from urban warfare to desolate wastelands. Despite the nostalgia, one might question why this mobile edition was chosen over more popular console versions.

No official explanation has clarified this decision, but the publishing history of the Armored Core series is complex, involving companies like Sega, Sony, Ubisoft, Agetec, and the current rights holder, Bandai Namco. With such an extensive legacy, navigating the administrative aspects of the series is no small feat, especially considering it might never reach the acclaim of titles like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.

If you’re interested in seeing gameplay from this port, YouTuber Cleric Armored Core recently streamed a session that could provide insight into what to expect.
