Nexus Mods Dismisses Rumor of Two-Year Bans for Sharing Links on Discord

Nexus Mods quashes rumor of 2-year bans for linking the site on Discord: 'There does not appear to be any risk of being moderated by Discord for posting Nexus Mods links'

The community manager of Nexus Mods, known as Pickysaurus, has issued a statement on the modding platform’s Discord channel, addressing a rumor that has been circulating across social media and gaming forums. This rumor suggests that Discord is penalizing users who post links to Nexus Mods. However, this claim appears to lack credibility.

In a message, Pickysaurus clarified, “We have not observed any instances of users being blocked for sharing links, aside from the aforementioned case,” referring to a post on r/pcgaming that mentioned a supposed case of mistaken auto moderation by Discord. He pointed out that it could merely be coincidental that a link to Nexus Mods was included in the moderation notice.

As of this writing, it seems there is no danger of being moderated by Discord for sharing Nexus Mods links. Both our team and various community members have tested posting links in different formats and settings without facing any repercussions. The recent discussions on Reddit appear to support this assertion.

I can also personally attest to this point: I shared a link to the Spider-Man 2 mod mentioned in the initial Reddit post across several servers I belong to, as did many others on the Nexus Mods Discord. Hours later, my Discord account remains fully accessible.

While there are indeed limitations regarding privacy on Discord, the company does conduct scans for highly harmful content, such as malware and child exploitation material. This information is outlined in a Q&A regarding the Discord Warning System, which also notes that scans may extend to other policy violations in larger communities.

However, when it comes to smaller spaces, like direct messages, group chats, and non-community servers, their scans are generally restricted to serious threats. Allegations of piracy or claims of erroneous piracy detection would likely fall into the category of other policy violations.

A few users on the Nexus Discord reported receiving incorrect copyright strikes linked to Nexus Mods URLs last August and September. Nonetheless, these incidents did not result in the lengthy bans suggested on Reddit and were swiftly resolved by Discord support. The post on Reddit seems to be the first such report since September 2025.

As always, it’s prudent to consider anything shared on a Discord server as a public communication, akin to a tweet. This caution is necessary not only due to Discord’s lack of encryption—unlike privacy-focused apps like Signal—but also because users often take screenshots of conversations and share them on social media.
