Guehi Joins Manchester City’s Ambitious Revamp as Title Race Heats Up

Marc Guehi

Manchester City has intensified its pursuit of the Premier League title by making strategic moves during the January transfer window. Last week, Pep Guardiola brought in Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth, and the Ghanaian forward has quickly made an impact, netting two goals and assisting once in his initial pair of matches.

City is poised to enhance their squad further with a preliminary agreement for Crystal Palace’s captain, Marc Guehi. Guardiola is optimistic that the defender will integrate smoothly into the first team, similar to Semenyo.

The club is currently grappling with a defensive injury crisis and is eager to close a six-point gap behind Arsenal after drawing their last three league fixtures. These new acquisitions mark the culmination of a year-long squad overhaul.

While the agreement for Guehi is not yet finalized—Liverpool’s failed summer attempt to secure him is a cautionary tale—it appears that City is on track for a successful deal this time.

City’s Financial Flexibility

Since January 1, 2025, City has welcomed 14 new players, investing approximately £414 million in a complete squad transformation. Guardiola is now navigating a fresh lineup and coaching staff after last season’s disappointment, where the club failed to clinch any major trophies for the first time in eight years.

Key figures in the team’s success such as Kevin de Bruyne, Ederson, Ilkay Gundogan, Kyle Walker, and Jack Grealish were all transferred during the summer, reducing both the squad’s average age and its wage expenditure.

In their financial report for the year ending June 2025, City recorded total revenues of £694 million, marking the third-highest figures in the club’s history. In a climate where many clubs are constrained by profit and sustainability regulations, how has City managed to invest so liberally?

“City are in an incredibly strong financial position as far as PSR is concerned,” said a football finance expert. “They have made profits of £144 million in the last three years in their accounts and clubs are allowed to lose up to £105 million. They have an awful lot of flexibility. Their wage bill has started to go down too because some of the big-hitters have left.”

According to the expert, City has effectively capitalized on player sales, generating £350 million in profit over the past three years. For instance, Cole Palmer was sold to Chelsea for £40 million, a transaction that reflects pure profit from their academy.

Despite their significant expenditures, City has also brought in considerable revenue from sales, a balance that has proven advantageous.

Guehi’s Strategic Acquisition

Once Guehi’s signing is confirmed, the management at Etihad Stadium will take pride in securing one of the premier centre-backs in the league. The 25-year-old has attracted interest from various clubs across Europe, not only during the last summer window but also in this current period.

City has long admired Guehi and was prepared to wait until summer for his signature; however, the urgent need arose due to injuries to Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol.

While young players Abdukodir Khusanov and Max Alleyne have stepped up admirably, competing for the title demands experienced players who can handle high-stakes matches. Guehi’s leadership will be invaluable, having previously captained Palace to an unexpected FA Cup victory against City at Wembley last season and playing a crucial role in England’s run to the final of the 2024 European Championship.

With only a few months remaining on his contract at Selhurst Park, a transfer fee of £20 million for a player with international experience in the Premier League is a highly favorable deal.

Sources indicate that this is a calculated acquisition rather than a hasty decision due to injuries, as City seeks a player anticipated to be a long-term asset.

Impact on the Squad

Since the beginning of last season, Guehi ranks among the top ten Premier League centre-backs for metrics such as clean sheets, duels won, aerial duels, and line-breaking passes. His addition will enhance the City defense with both composure and physical presence.

This potential signing could signal the end of John Stones’ tenure at the club, as the English defender is currently sidelined with an injury and his contract is set to expire this summer. Stones featured in just 11 Premier League matches last season and has appeared in only seven so far this year.

Earlier this month, Guardiola hinted at uncertainties regarding Stones’ future, highlighting the importance of considering his injury history in upcoming contract discussions.

Arsenal’s Response to City’s Moves

Guehi is expected to step directly into the City starting lineup, a move that has certainly caught the attention of Arsenal, who are closely monitoring the strengthening of one of their main rivals.

Reports suggest that the Gunners were also vying for Guehi’s signature but hoped he would postpone signing with City to join them in the summer. However, this scenario seems increasingly unlikely, as personal terms between Guehi and City are expected to be easily agreed upon.

Since Mikel Arteta took charge in December 2019, Arsenal has invested over £900 million in new talent, including £250 million this summer, as the club aims to secure its first Premier League title in years.

Despite their extensive spending in recent seasons, Arsenal remains in a solid financial position to continue investing. “If they need to spend £100 million this month, they can do that,” the expert noted. “From a PSR perspective, Arsenal doesn’t have much to worry about.”

With City clearly signaling their ambitions, the question now remains: how will Arsenal respond?
