Rooney Endorses Carrick as Ideal Interim Choice for Manchester United

Michael Carrick claps his hands

Wayne Rooney has expressed his belief that Michael Carrick is the most suitable candidate to take on the role of caretaker head coach at Manchester United during this challenging period.

The announcement came on Tuesday, confirming that Carrick will lead the team through to the end of the season, stepping in for Ruben Amorim.

Having shared the pitch with Carrick at Old Trafford for 366 matches, during which they celebrated five Premier League championships, Rooney views this decision as logical.

“It is probably the obvious choice really because I don’t think there are any top, top managers available at the minute,”

Rooney commented on the latest episode of his podcast.

He continued, “I think it is the right choice at this moment in time. It is a difficult task of course. Where Manchester United are at the minute is not a good place and Michael has to go in and steady the ship.”

Despite Carrick’s interim role, uncertainty lingers regarding the club’s future managerial appointment come summer.

Names like Xabi Alonso, who recently departed Real Madrid, and England’s Thomas Tuchel have already emerged as potential candidates.

“Alonso did incredible at Leverkusen and I think you have more chance of him sitting and waiting and hoping with [Liverpool manager Arne] Slot,”

Rooney remarked.

“Tuchel is the one for me. He knows the Premier League, has won trophies. He is doing well at England. Time will tell.”

Reflecting on Carrick’s prior experience, he made 464 appearances for Manchester United over a 12-year career and briefly served as caretaker manager in 2021, securing two victories and one draw.

Having managed Middlesbrough from 2002 to 2005, Carrick’s leadership style is noteworthy.

“Michael’s great fun. He is a great character, but don’t be fooled by how calm he looks,”

Rooney stated, emphasizing that Carrick would approach his new role with unwavering focus.

Currently, Manchester United stands at seventh place in the Premier League, having managed to win only one of their last six matches.

Carrick’s first challenge will be a high-stakes match against Manchester City on Saturday at 12:30 GMT.

“It is a massive game for the club, for Michael,”

Rooney noted, highlighting the significance of the upcoming clash.

“I think what he will do is bring a bit of calmness, a bit of grit to the game, which I think is needed. It is going to be very difficult, Manchester City are obviously a top team and it will be difficult to get anything out of it even at Old Trafford.”

Nonetheless, Rooney remains hopeful that Manchester United can secure a favorable outcome, reflecting on their historical capacity to rise to the occasion.

With Carrick taking the helm, he has enlisted former England assistant Steve Holland as his right-hand man, along with Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion as part of the coaching staff.

Holland has a strong track record, having contributed to England’s impressive fourth-place finish in the 2018 World Cup and their runner-up status at Euro 2020 and 2024.

“I was really impressed with him tactically at England, how he worked and his organisation,”

Rooney said, praising Holland’s capabilities.

“Steve Holland did all the training, Gareth Southgate didn’t really, he’d be more the manager and Steve took all the sessions. I think what they will bring, Michael and Steve, is an organisation to Manchester United and I’m sure we’ll see on Saturday, they’ll be harder to beat.”
